12 schools may19 2016 VHS Spring Sports Report Softball – The Vernonia Lady Loggers won the Northwest League and clinched a spot in the state playoffs, going undefeated in league play with a 15-0 record. Vernonia ended league play with a three game sweep of Knappa, winning 15-2, 12-0, and 29-5. They currently have a 19-4 overall record and wrap up their season with a non- league game at Regis on Friday, May 20. Vernonia, ranked 10 th in the state, will host a state playoff game on Wednesday, May 25. Their opponent has not been determined at press time. The Lady Loggers’ big bats led to the team leading all of 2A this season with 396 runs scored, while their strong pitching and defense held opponents to just 82 runs scored, fourth best in the state. Head coach Mike Fetch says the whole line up has hit the ball well and noted that Kassidy Fetch, Payton Wolf, Allegra Poetter, Pearl Cook, Sara Smith, Sara Smith Paige Smith, Cassidy Whitton, and Joyce Everett, have all had good seasons at the plate and at times hit with power. Fetch and freshman Everett have teamed up as a strong pitching duo with Cook behind the plate. “I’ve really been impressed with Joyce this season,” said coach Fetch. “She’s been a real surprise.” He has also been impressed with Cook’s arm, who he says has been throwing out a lot of runners. While strong hitting and solid pitching has been key, team defense has really been important to the Lady Loggers strong showing this season. “This might be one of the best defensive teams our school has ever had,” said coach Fetch. Wolf, Poetter and the Smith girls have held together the infield with Cook doing a great job behind the plate and Fetch and Everett also playing pretty mistake free. Whitton, Fetch, and Everrett have been starters in the outfield with Jocie Roberts and Vivianna Bustamante also seeing playing time. Coach Fetch thanked the fans for their support, coach Ernie Smith for his fantastic work in prepping the fields, Katie Poetter for her help with the team, Aaron Miller for his hours preparing the new softball field, and all the alumni Sheyanne Pederesen who donated and helped with the construction of Alumni Softball Field. Equestrian Team – Two members of the Vernonia Equestrian team competed in the state meet on May 12-14. Over 300 athletes and 70 Oregon high schools participate in the State OHSET meet. Kassidy Fetch, riding Joe, competed in Barrels and finished 8 th over all out of 47 athletes. continued on page 14 Ha nd -cr Loc al o rga nic sta rts & aft ed May - September go od NEW LOCATION! s & mo pro New lo duce cation ! ! re !
