12 schools may5 2016 Jr. Salmon Auction Scheduled for May 26 Mark your calendars! On May 26 th the Vernonia Hands On Art Center, the local non-profit arts and heritage support group, presents the eight annual Jr. Salmon Auction. The goal this year is to again push past the $2,000 mark in raised funds. A fundraiser for the Vernonia Schools arts program, the auction features the amazing salmon creations of Vernonia art students. The students are supplied with blank pressboard salmon on which to craft their own unique visions. In addition to salmon, students have worked their magic on small furniture items that will also be included in the auction. Beginning at 7:00 pm in the VHS Commons, the salmon will be auctioned off with a minimum starting bid of $10.00. Proceeds from the auction support Vernonia School Arts, Scholarships, and Hands On Art programs. Over $10,000 has been donated to the arts programs to date! This auction is the community’s way to help the school with funding shortfalls. Since 2006, the school art supply budget has fallen from $24 per student to just under $5. Pens, paper, paint, and everything else come from this budget. Art teacher Linda Allen has had to spend part of her salary on supplies, some of the shortfall has been relieved by the auction proceeds, but there is the Jr. Salmon created by Paige Smith. need for more. In order to have kept up with the cost of materials, the budget today should be $4,950. This means a $2,000 gap still exists. The Jr. Salmon auction is a good place to open up your heart and wallet to the arts programs at Vernonia Schools.
