Beyond the Scoreboard: Sports in Our Lives and Communities
A free discussion about sports
and community; part of
Oregon Humanities’ statewide
Conversation Project.
Americans devote huge amounts
of time and attention to sports and
physical activities ranging from tiny tot
tee ball and round-up rodeos to Friday
night football and Blazermania. Some
see sports as opportunities for building
character and community identity as well
as for contributing to the local economy.
Others see the very same activities
as distractions from more important
community matters. Can both these
seemingly contradictory perspectives be
true?
This
is
the
focus of “Beyond the
Scoreboard:
Sports
in Our Lives and
Communities,” a free
conversation
with
Andrew
Guest
on
Tuesday, May 24, 6:30
– 8 pm at the Vernonia
Public Library, 701
Weed Ave. This program
is hosted by the Friends
of the Vernonia Public
Library and sponsored by Oregon
Humanities.
Guest is an associate professor
of psychology and sociology at the
University of Portland, where he has
taught since 2004. He has a background
as a coach and athlete
in locales ranging from
suburban Portland to
urban Detroit to rural
Malawi.

members
in
thoughtful, challenging
conversations
about
ideas critical to our daily lives and our
