8 community april21 2016 Beyond the Scoreboard: Sports in Our Lives and Communities A free discussion about sports and community; part of Oregon Humanities’ statewide Conversation Project. Americans devote huge amounts of time and attention to sports and physical activities ranging from tiny tot tee ball and round-up rodeos to Friday night football and Blazermania. Some see sports as opportunities for building character and community identity as well as for contributing to the local economy. Others see the very same activities as distractions from more important community matters. Can both these seemingly contradictory perspectives be true? This is the focus of “Beyond the Scoreboard: Sports in Our Lives and Communities,” a free conversation with Andrew Guest on Tuesday, May 24, 6:30 – 8 pm at the Vernonia Public Library, 701 Weed Ave. This program is hosted by the Friends of the Vernonia Public Library and sponsored by Oregon Humanities. Guest is an associate professor of psychology and sociology at the University of Portland, where he has taught since 2004. He has a background as a coach and athlete in locales ranging from suburban Portland to urban Detroit to rural Malawi. Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state’s future.
