community 15 Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness continued from page 7 2016 Banks Library Plant and Book Sale The Friends of the Banks Public Library are gearing up for their Annual Plant and Book Sale. The sale will include local crafts and garden art, in addition to a broad selection of plants and used books. The sale will be held at Schlegel Hall in Sunset Park on Friday, May 6 from 2 pm to 7 pm and Saturday, May 7 from 9 am to 3 pm Friends of the Banks Library will be able to shop early at 1 pm. This sale is a perfect opportunity for last minute Mother’s Day shopping. Credit cards are accepted. Plants are coming from local nurseries and gardeners, and will include vegetable starts, annuals, perennials, planters, herbs and trees. The Friends always strive to have some unusual varieties available. All are offered at reasonable prices, and the Friends receive a portion of all sales. Books for all levels of readers will be offered for sale as well as some videos and other materials. Items for sale will include private donations as well as withdrawn library materials. If you wish to donate plants or books for the sale, please contact the Banks Public Library at (503) 324- 1382. The Plant and Book Sale is a major fundraising activity for the Friends of the Banks Public Library. The Friends’ funds are used by the library to purchase bestsellers and current titles, CDs, DVDs, equipment and programs for the library throughout the year. The Friends fund a weekly Story Time for preschool children, a summer reading program for early readers through teens, and are actively raising funds for the construction of the Jane Moore Community Room at the library. Patrons are invited to join in the celebration and help the local food bank. During this week, the library will donate fines collected from patrons to the Banks Food Pantry. Opportunities to get involved in local efforts extend into May, when SAFE will host its annual fundraiser, Roots of Resilience, on May 6 at 5:30 pm at the Columbia River Events and Receptions Center in St. Helens. The garden-themed event includes a live auction, hors d’oeuvres, and no-host bar. Tickets are available by clicking Roots of Resilience at the SAFE’s home page, www.safeofcolumbiacounty. org. Funds support SAFE’s programs for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. Participation in any and all of these events is encouraged and shows survivors of child abuse and sexual violence that they live in a community that cares. NOTICE OF BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING A public meeting of the Budget Committee of the Vernonia School District 47J, Columbia County, State of Oregon, on the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, will be held at 1000 Missouri Street, Vernonia Oregon. The meeting will take place on May 5, 2016 at 6:00 PM The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message. This is a public meeting where deliberation of the Budget Committee will take place. An additional, separate meeting of the Budget Committee will be held to take public comment. Any person may appear at the meeting and discuss the proposed programs with the Budget Committee.
