12 schools april7 2016 VHS Spring Sports Report Softball – The Lady Loggers are off to a very good start to this new season and should be one of the favorites to win Special District 1. Sara Smith Vernonia started off the season going 2-1 at the Seaside Tournament, falling to Astoria 10-8 before beating Warrenton/Jewell 14-1 and Woodburn 15-5. The Lady Loggers kicked off league play by demolishing Nestucca in three games, 26-4, 32-0 and 31-1 and also beat Colton 16-6 in a non league match up and then beat Delphian 26-0 in a league game on Tuesday, April 5. The Lady Loggers are loaded with talent and experience this season with seniors Kassidy Fetch, Paige Smith and Sara Smith, leading the way. Fetch, an All State selection last year, will handle most of the pitching duties. Sara Smith, also an All State selection last year, is playing with a serious knee injury, but is playing first base and still hitting the ball well; she already has several home runs this season. Junior Payton Wolf is also carrying a big bat for the Loggers and helps anchor the infield at second base. Sophomore Allegra Poetter, another All State pick from last year will play at third base and also do some catching and is another big bat in the lineup. Freshman Joyce Everett will do some pitching and will play wherever needed in the field. Junior Cassidy Whitton and Pearl Cook will also play important roles. The Lady Loggers have upcoming home games against Neah-Kah-Nie on April 12 and a double header against Gaston on Friday, April 22. Baseball – The Loggers look like they might put together a good season this year. With a 6-1 record to start the season, the Loggers look like they could battle Knappa for the Special District 1 title this year.
