march3 2016 VERNONIA’S volume10 issue5 www.vernoniasvoice.com reflecting the spirit of our community Lions Commence Fundraising for Dewey Pool Improvements The Vernonia Lions Club, in con- junction with the Vernonia City Parks Com- mittee and City Council, have begun plan- ning for a restoration of the Dewey Pool Swimming Hole area. The Lions have begun fundraising for the project which will include a new, professionally installed, long life liner for the wading pool, and renovations to the steps and sitting area surrounding the pool, as funds allow. The way Vernonia forms the swim- ming hole and wading pool from Rock free Creek, a Class A stream, is very unique as there are only a hand full of communities in the nation that enjoy this luxury. The project is being headed by Lions Club members Rick Hobart, Jerry Keenon and Teresa Bruckin. The entire project is estimated to cost $30,000, with $2,500 already committed from the Lions Club. A Donation Account for the project has been set up and donations can be made at any U.S. Bank location under the account name “Vernonia Lions Club.” St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Vernonia resident Pam Kofstad did the ALS Challenge in the summer of 2014. “I did it,” said Kofstad in a recent inteview. “I didn’t even know what ALS was.” Little did she know she would soon be learning more about ALS than she could have ever imagined. *** Until two years ago Kofstad was a happy and healthy administra- tive assistant at Pacific University in her late 50s. She enjoyed spending time with her husband Harvey, her five children, her 13 grandchildren and her many friends. Then everything changed. After developing difficulty moving her left toes, foot and even- tually her leg, Kofstad spent a year searching for answers to what was causing her condition. Finally Kofstad received an answer, but it was not an answer she was ready for. Last April she was diagnosed with ALS, a terminal illness that affects the nervous system and muscles. Dur- ing the last year she has slowly seen her day-to-day living skills deteriorate continued on page 6 The Vernonia Loggers are headed to the OSAA 2A Boys Basketball State Championship! The Loggers and Lady Loggers basketball teams both hosted the Bonanza Antlers in the first round of the OSAA state playoffs on Saturday, February 27, 2016. The Logger boys defeated Bonanza 65-60 to earn a trip to the final eight in Pendleton on March 3-5. The #2 ranked Loggers face #7 Burns at 8:15 pm in the first round on Thursday, March 3. The Loggers have now won 25 straight games and have a 25-1 record on the season. The Loggers won the Northwest League title on February 20 with an 84- Clay Sullivan 78 win over City Christian. The #8 ranked Lady Loggers fell to #9 Bonanza 60-58 in a tightly contested match-up earlier in the day at the Vernonia gymnasium. The Lady Loggers finished their season with a 24-3 record that included their fourth straight Northwest League title after they beat Neah-Kah-Nie 54-49 on February 20.
