12 schools january21 2016 VHS Winter Sports Update Boys Basketball – The Vernonia boys continued their dominance of the Northwest League with four league wins in the last two weeks. The Loggers have now won 13 straight games and are currently ranked #3 in OSAA 2A with a 8-0 league record and 13-1 record over all. Vernonia traveled and beat Knappa 57-38 on January 8, defeated Nestucca 47- 19, and overpowered Gaston 89-44, before returning home for an exciting, come from behind, overtime 69-64 win over #10 ranked Life Christian on Tuesday, January 19. The Loggers will travel to Delphian and are then looking forward to a huge test against #1 ranked Western Mennonite away on January 23. The Loggers return home against City Christian on January 26, travel to Neah-Kah-Nie on January 28, and then play at home versus Knappa on January 30. Girls Basketball – The Lady Loggers have now won 13 straight games after easily defeating Life Christian at home by a score of 72-28 on Tuesday, Janaury 19. Vernonia is ranked #7 in OSAA 2A and boast a 7-0 record against Northwest League opponents and a 14-1 record over all. The Lady Loggers recently traveled for four straight games, defeating Knappa 64-29, Columbia Christian 52-26, Nestucca 50-32 and Gaston 53-17. Against Life Christian the Lady Loggers looked sharp with point guard Leire Valladares running and pushing the high tempo offense up the court. Their inside game continues to be a strength, with Paige Smith, Megan Ely and Morgan SE 6, Noon-6 pm Harral dominating the paint. Vivianna Bustamante, Payton Wolf, Jocie Roberts and Sara Smith also saw significant minutes on the wings. The Lady Loggers will travel on January 23 for a tough matchup with defending state champions Western Mennonite, currently ranked #6. The Loggers return home on January 26 against City Christian, travel to face Neah-Kah- Nie on January 28, and then play at home against Knappa on January 30. Wrestling – The Loggers had two good meets when they traveled to the Pac Rim Tournament in Seaside on January 8-9 and returned to the Oregon Classic in Redmond on January 15-16. At the Pac Rim Tournament Kalia Jackson got a quareterfinal 7-4 decision win on her way to taking 6 th place at 106 pounds. Mekhi Williams took 6 th place at 126 going 3-3 in the tournament and recording 2 wins by fall. Storm Hensen went 2-2 at 145 pounds, but did not place. Jake Harbour also went 2-2 at 152 pounds and also did not place.
