4 community bulletin board december3 2015 Another Round: More Words of Wisdom About Beer By Scott Laird Winter and Holiday Ales – Tis the season for special releases of winter seasonals and holiday ales. We picked up a few to try to kick off the festivities: New Belgium Accumulation is a seasonal White IPA that goes against the tradition of brewing dark winter ales. It is light golden in color, medium bodied, with a nice hops bitterness. The fruit and especially the citrus flavors are strong in this crisp and easy to drink brew. Deschutes Chasin’ Freshies IPA – This seasonal release is fresh hopped, with the Lemondrop hops flavor captured right off the vine and really coming through. It was golden in color and very drinkable. A nice addition to the Deschutes family. Sierra Nevada Celebration – Another fresh hopped IPA features Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops. This amber colored ale had a thick creamy head and lots of hops aroma and flavor. First brewed in 1981, it’s one of the first American IPAs and is now a long standing holiday tra- dition. Deschutes Jubelale – No winter is complete without this spicy and hoppy holiday ale. This is the 28 th year the folks at Deschutes have released Jubelale. One of the best things about Jubel is the bottle artwork, which Deschutes has changed for each of the past 21 years. This year’s packaging fea- tures a detailed illustration by Bend artist Taylor Rose of a wintry hiking scene along a trout-filled river. Anchor Winter Wheat – When I opened this bottle I was expecting to pour something golden, but instead was surprised by a very dark ale. This malty brew was medium bodied, robust and com- plex. First brewed in 2014, this is a very nice addition to the winter seasonal selection. McMenamins Kris Kringle – This traditional Yuletide Ale is rich and malty with a hint of chocolate and a strong hop finish. Dark amber in color, and big in flavor, this is a delicious addition to any holiday gathering. Laurelwood Vinter Varmer – This Brown Ale was a dark, ruby red in color and featured hints of caramel with a nice mel- low hoppiness. Light on the spice, this is still a nice holiday ale to add to your list to try. Columbia Humane Society Featured Pet fercules came to the shelter when his family was no longer able to care for him. fe was very scared and can be a little shy when meeting new people. fe has settled right into his home here at the shelter but we would love to see him in a home for the holidays. fe isn't going to be the best dog with little kids. fowever he will be fine with older kids that can better understand him. fe is very loving and sweet once he trusts you. fe is just about 2 years old and weighs about 10 lbs. fis adoption fee is $165.00, which includes all his vaccines and his microchip. Scouting For Food The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Troop 860 will be participating in the Cascade Pacific Council’s “Scouting for Food” campaign again this year on December 5th beginning at 9am to benefit Vernonia Cares Scouts will be leaving plastic bags at people homes on the morning of Wednesday, November 25th. Please leave bags with canned goods on your porches. There will also be a drop off site at the Vernonia Dental Office for anyone who would like to donate after the 5th.
