6 city news august20 2015 On The Shelves By Shannon Romtvedt Upcoming Events Summer Readong was a success thos year woth 104 choldren sogned-up to the program. A record for the lobrary! A few parents commented that the program onspored theor non-reader to read or kods to read more, onspored by the oncentoves (weekly and grand proze drawongs, free book for finosh- ers). A total of 198 kods and 137 adults attended Summer Readong events, oncludong Border Colloes Internatoonal, Story and Craft Tomes, and Stages Youth Academy. Police Department-VPD • Police Department staff were mostly busy preparing for and patrolling (with the collaboration of other Law Enforcement Agencies) the city/area during the Friendship Jamboree. Finance • The first construction meeting was held for the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Staff, contractor, site inspectors and project manager met on site to mostly go over how the meetings would be conducted throughout the project. We also went over the preliminary construction schedule which will start with the pipe gallery which will mean trail closure along the backside of the lagoons to the Lake beginning August 24th until sometime in late fall. The goal is to finish this part of the project before the rainy season begins. • Several bid packets have been requested for the Spencer Park Restroom project. We should have several bids to choose from once the bid period closes. • The City’s IT consultant was out to install the backup system for the servers at City Hall. This will allow for offsite storage which will allow for restoration of all City files in the event of a fire or other disaster. Public Works • Public Works crew was hard at work getting ready for the great event. Lots of Jamboree preparation (citywide) before, during and after the celebration. So far, 31 kids have returned time logs and chosen a free book (plus entered a grand prize drawing). Kids had until August 15 to return time logs. • Circulation Statistics: 2,133 items were checked out the month of July 2015. By comparison, 1,949 items were checked out June 2015 and 1,718 items were checked out in July 2014. • Friends of the Library were busy setting up the library for the book sale Jamboree weekend. The book sale was a big success! • Library staff have been processing new and donated material for the collection this week. Also training new staff and volunteers on processing. A lot of work goes into adding books and DVDs to the collection! Parks • Staff made final preparation for the Spencer Park grand opening, removed old chain link fence, and installed new chain link fence by covered basketball playground; defined play area at playground with power poles around perimeter, and leveled out bark chips; swept parking lot with push brooms. American Legion Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament Saturday, September 12th 6:00 pm Prizes • Hot Dogs • Sodas • Repaired five broken picnic tables and delivered them to Shay Park to be used for Jamboree celebration. Also made final improvements at Vernonia Lake: repaired lighting in women’s bathroom, (sensor had gone bad), installed 4x4 posts to stretch cable across fire lane. • Lots of Jamboree preparation citywide including painting street curbs. An excess of garbage was picked up in the 1-ton dump truck and the vault toilets were vacuumed out. • Regular park maintenance, mowing and weed eating is ongoing. City Recorder/Administration • Lots of time spent on preparation for Jamboree and New Spencer Park Grand Opening celebration. Coordinated event with VIPs, vendors, and departments for different tasks and activities. City Administrator • Preparation for Jamboree was the focus of our staff’s activity this week. It really does take a tremendous staff, community and strategic partners’ effort to put together this event and to insure that it runs smoothly, and it is enjoyed by all. Different law enforcement agencies were in assistance to our Police Department as well. • The City Administrator attended the Wastewater Treatment Plant preconstruction meeting. In attendance were representatives from R&G Excavating (contractor), Gordon Munro Engineer (Tetra Tech), and PW Foreman and Finance Director (City of Vernonia). • Together with representative from Community Action Team, and Senior Center Board the City Administrator attended the Senior Center/Food Bank preliminary meeting.
