in other words august6 2015 9 Another Round: More Words of Wisdom About Beer By Scott Laird Roadhouse Brewfest I had the pleasure of attending the 14 th Annual Roadhouse Brewfest at McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse on Saturday, July 18 th . This is the first year I’ve made it after promising myself to attend for several years, and what a pleasant surprise! This small, low key event was a sharp contrast to some of the other larger outdoor summer brewfests that the Portland region is known for. For this festival brewers from several McMenamins properties, including the Crystal Brewery, Edgefield Brewery, John Barleycorns, and of course the hosts at the Roadhouse, made up some special brews. The Edgefield Winery also sent along three ciders. Last year the Roadhouse invited several other neighboring westside brewers to participate and that new tradition continued this year with brews from Fort George in Astoria; Three Mugs, Ambacht and Vertigo Brewing all from Hillsboro; and Heater Allen from McMinnville. Also on tap were Hopworks, Oakhills, Burnside, and Ecliptic from Portland, along with cider from Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider in Portland and 2 Towns Ciderhouse in Corvallis. Several of the brewers provided special barrel-aged kegs just for the festival. There were 19 different choices in all, making this a decent sized brewfest when you get down to it. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable with lots of shade trees and grassy areas for lounging, which was nice since the temperature was 98 degrees when we arrived at 6:30 pm. There was food for sale, including bratwursts and burgers, and festival goers were also welcome to wander the property and grab one of the numerous picnic tables in the seating area adjacent to Imbrie Hall, the Roadhouse restaurant, and order from the full menu. Brewery and Distillery tours were available during the day and there was live music from two different bands under a large tent including McMenamins favorites The Freak Mountain Ramblers. The best part of this festival, after the awesome selection of brews, which I’ll get to in a minute, was the price. Admission was just $17, which includes 10 tasting tokens and a beautiful festival glass. Wait, wait... it gets better. At the Roadhouse Brewfest they pour 4 oz. tasters for a single token, not the usual 2 oz. like most brew fests, which stretched your tokens twice as far! You could also get an 8 oz. pour for 2 tokens and a full 12 oz. glass for 3 tokens. Additional tokens could be purchased for $1.50. OK, about the beer and cider. The brewers at the Roadhouse had an amazing Crow Barrel-Aged Double R IPA, aged in their own distillery’s Billy Whiskey barrels. The barrel aging really smoothes out the hoppiness to make a delicious and big beer. The Edgefield Brewery sent a Double Barrel Baltic Porter, aged in two different whiskey barrels, a malty brew with lots of chocolate, toffee, vanilla and oak flavors. The Roadhouse Brewery also had Sunbow Blonde on tap, a light, summery, and very drinkable ale. Summer beers were obviously what this fest was about. There were several IPAs on tap, a Pilsner from Heater Allen, an interesting Pie Cherry Dark Ale from Ambacht, a Tropical “Key Lime” Blonde from Vertigo, Booty Back Lager from Fort George, and a Gin Barrel- Aged Gose from Burnside. Rhino Red from the Crystal Brewery and Oak Hills Mexi-Revolution Porter rounded out the beer selection. With the extra hot weather the ciders were a popular choice. The Edgefield ciders included their Estate Cider, Hard Cider and their delicious Black Cherry Cider. Reverend Nat’s also sent an Apple Cider and 2 Towns sent Made Marion Marrionberry Cider. This was an excellent brewfest with a little bit of everything, making it a great all around experience and a “can’t miss” for next summer.
