6 city news august6 2015 City Department Updates Our PW crew responded to a citizen’s call alerting about standing water. LIBRARY • Welcome to the newest Vernonia Library staff member, Brandi Fennell! Brandi lives in Vernonia, is a member of the Library Board, is Secretary of the Freewheelers, and currently works as an Instructional Aide for the Vernonia School District. • 100 kids signed up for Summer Reading. Summer Story and Craft Time Tuesday, August 25, 10:30 – 11:30 am For Pre-K through Grade 3. Book Group Storytime • Kids can now turn in time logs to pick out a free book and enter the grand prize drawing. Award books for participants were funded by the Vernonia Lions Club and the Friends of the Vernonia Library. • The Friends of the Library Book Sale is coming up during Jamboree weekend. Hours are Friday, August 7th, 4:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday, August 8th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. • We had 22 kids and adults come to the Story and Craft program and 45 come to the Summer Reading Party. Thank you to party volunteers: Rachel Langmaid, Nichole Gardner, Courtney Fennell, Caitlyn Fennell, Hera Hopkins, Charity Coleman, Sophia Shelnut, Jeana Gump, El Donna Williams, and Paulette Romtvedt. What a fun event! Thank you for supporting the library! PARKS • Lots of tree trimming, weedwacking, and clean up at Spencer Park, Anderson Park and Vernonia Lake. • Utilized the lift truck to remove another row of the glass blocks that had been broken at the basketball court. Relocated 2 aluminum benches from the basketball court to the new softball field. • The side mounted brush hog was installed on the new tractor and will be extremely helpful in cutting back areas that the weedeater has trouble with, like blackberry bushes. CITY RECORDER / ADMINISTRATION • The City Recorder is making preparations for the GRAND OPENING of the new Spencer Park. The Ceremony will be at 9:00 am Saturday, August 8th, 2015. Vernonia Mayor Randy Parrow along with Senator Betsy Johnson, and Columbia County Commissioner Tony Hyde will officially open the park. Activities held on opening day include; Vernonia Soccer Club ceremonial games, Westside Cruise-In Car Show, and Women’s Softball Tournament. CITY ADMINISTRATOR • The City has signed an IGA with CREST Planners to provide planning services. • City Administrator met with Richard Kearns and Virginia Williams (ODOT Permit Specialist) to discuss improvements along Hwy 47 including installation of a pedestrian crossing at Hwy 47 and Cougar Street. • City Administrator and Assistant to the City Administrator met with Justin Parker (Oregon State Park Ranger) to discuss concerns and projected improvements along the Banks- Vernonia Trail. • City Administrator and City Attorney finalized extension contract for the GIS Planner Consultant, Ben Fousek. The extension is for a three month period. A multi-year scope of work will be drafted. • City Administrator met with Brad Curtis (Photo Solutions) to discuss the relocation of Photo Solutions and potential improvements to California Avenue. • The City Administrator and Assistant to the City Administrator met with Melanie Olson and Loren Schultz (Infrastructure Finance Authority – IFA -) and Becky Baxter (Business Oregon) to discuss the financing contract for the Vernonia Street Improvement and Utility Installation Project (signed in June 2014) and the projected development of the Senior Center/Food Bank. • The City Administrator met with Dan Cary (Oregon Department of State Lands) to discuss historical data (violations), current conditions, and proposed solutions to mitigate and eliminate the outstanding issues currently present at Nickerson Ridge Estate.
