Michael Calhoun Mary Lou Pense Michael Calhoun of Vernonia, Oregon is a graduate of Western Oregon University. Calhoun received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and Minor in Social Science, at the 158 th Commencement Ceremony, June 13, 2015, in Monmouth, Oregon. While at Western Oregon University Calhoun’s activities included President of the Communication Club, Founding Father of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and a Founding member of Western Oregon University’s Tree Advisory Board. Calhoun was also active for the community of Monmouth, Oregon serving as a Tree Board member. Model United Nations debate team was another activity he favored. Nominated by his professors at Western Oregon University and his peers, Calhoun was elected into Who’s Who for College Campus Students, 2014-2015. Michael Calhoun’s future plans are Graduate courses in Environmental Studies, with a career in Environmental Communication. Calhoun is the son of Steve and Carol Calhoun of Vernonia, Oregon. Mary Lou Pense, 67, a resident of the Vernonia community, died Tuesday morning, June 30, 2015 at her home. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Columbia River Foursquare Church, 555 Commons Drive in St. Helens OR, with Pastor Mike Cooke officiating. Family and friends were invited to attend a reception immediately following the church ceremony, held in the fellowship hall of the church. MARY LOU PENSE was born March 26, 1948 in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of the late Harold A. Ashpole and Mary Freda (Miller) Ashpole. She was raised and received her education in the community of Moline, Illinois having been a graduate of the High School Class of 1965. She was united in marriage to Pastor Carl Pense on October 7, 1969 in Los Angeles, CA. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this past October. Mary Lou served with her husband, Pastor Carl, at several congregations in the communities of Pendleton, OR, Iowa A Trusted Name in Funeral Service Angel Memorials Headstones City, IA, Alma, MI, Columbia City, OR, Anderson, CA, Fairfield, CA, and Burney, CA until 2005 when they moved to the Vernonia community, to serve the Foursquare Church. Mary Lou had served as a caregiver in the healthcare industry for the State of Oregon for the past six years. She was an active member of the community, volunteering with the local school, senior center, and women’s ministries in the local churches. Among her special interests she enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening. Mary Lou also was appreciated by many for her counseling and mentoring. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Mary Ashpole. Survivors include her husband, Pastor Carl Pense, of the family home in Vernonia, Oregon; her four children and their spouses, Carla and Joe Pletsch, of Saint Helens, Oregon; Paul and Crystal Pense, of Saint Helens, Oregon; Joel and Monica Pense, of Bellingham, Washington; Marah Pense, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and her brother Donald Ashpole, of Moline, Illinois. Also surviving are her twelve grandchildren: Mary, Micah, Jordan, Kiana, Josiah, Noah, Tanner, Andrew, Katie, Gracie, Buzz, and Xavier. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Vernonia Foursquare Church/Missions/Marah, whom she faithfully supported monthly, 850 Madison Avenue, Vernonia, Oregon 97064, in her memory. CHARLES “DUANE” GRAHAM was born March 23, 1936 in Osceola, Iowa, the son of the late Delphine Swayze Graham and Edith (Allen) Graham. The family moved from Iowa to Lebam, Washington, to Missouri and then back to Lebam, Washington. He was united in marriage to Barbara A. McGinnis on July 12, 1958 at Rev. Gravner’s home in West Union, Oregon. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past July. Following their marriage they have made their home mainly in the Banks/ Manning community. Duane worked as a stone mason in the construction industry for forty- seven years, until he retired at the age of sixty-five. He had worked on several high rise projects in Portland, as well as throughout the United States including the Arco Tower in Dallas, Texas. He was a longtime and active member of the Manning Bible Church in Manning, Oregon and a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Union Local #1 in Portland. Among his special interests he enjoyed farming/raising cattle, riding horses, reading scripture and RB Thieme Jr. books. Duane enjoyed having his family around him. Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Delphine and Edith Graham, his brother, Earl Graham and his four sisters, Vivian Kaech, Twyla Camenzind, Cecil Christian and Louise Kaech. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Graham, of the family home in Manning, Oregon; his four daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Mike Javorsky, of Banks, Oregon; Desiree Graham, of Oregon City, Oregon; Tammi and Kevin Transue, of Oregon City, Oregon and Heidi and Gary Kuiper, of Banks, Oregon; his son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Teri Graham, of Banks, Oregon and his three sisters and brothers-in- law, Bernice Camenzind, of Labam, Washington; Judy and Fred Workman, of Paragould, Arkansas and Katherine and Bert Huffacker, of Portland, Oregon.
