schools First Cross Country practice is Monday, August 18 at 9:00 AM Meet in the VHS cafeteria Readers Lend Their Voices... continued from page 5 First let me say that being the chairman only means that I try to keep everyone connected and that each individual who heads up a project is the one doing all the work. I would like to thank a few individuals that without, we would not have had a Jamboree. I want to express the utmost thanks to Alicia Normand, who’s family has been in Vernonia for many, many years, but she doesn’t even live here and she has done and is still doing so much for this community. Randy Carlton, who is involved in almost everything that goes on in Vernonia. Jesse Taylor, without her we would not have the advertising we have had, posters, banners, logo, etc. Lance Kemper, who was a big part of every project from start to finish. Kelly and Lindsay Baska, who have the daunting task of making the logging show successful. Kim (Bernardi) Hargrave, who took on the parade and did such a wonderful job. Sarah (Tatman) Rumbolz who took on the almost impossible job of providing music, with a very small budget. Melissa Zavales, who took on the kids zone and provided our children with some great fun, while raising money for the Freshman and Junior classes. Bill Hawkins, this is the guy who has been involved in the Jamboree longer than most of our members have been alive. Bill has shared so much knowledge with us, and helped us to not make some mistakes that have happened before, and has shared things that really worked in the past. Scott Laird, who made sure the word got out, did advertising, and helped us in so many other ways. A big thanks to the Vernonia High School Cheer team, their coach and the Vernonia High School Wrestling team for taking care of all the garbage in town. I know I have missed people, because there are so many that have contributed. Most of all I want to send out the biggest thank you to our sponsors for all their support and we look forward to working with you in the future. Now last but most importantly I want to thank all the spouses and significant others of all these people, as they have supported, helped and put up with all of us over that past 12 months of meeting, planning, being frustrated and being away from home. I hope you all enjoyed this year’s Jamboree, and please if you see these people around town, take a second to say thank you, because that’s all they do this for. Also, know that we are only taking about a week off before we start working towards next year’s event. If you have ideas, concerns, or issues, please let one of these people or myself know and we will take everything into consideration in the planning of next year’s Jamboree. Ernie Smith Jamboree Chairman The Council should have known they would alienate one of the City’s strongest proponents in Mitchell when they chose someone else, yet they seemed unprepared for Mitchell’s re- sponse. Mitchell’s contract as Interim expired on August 1st. She declined to extend it, leaving the City with no Ad- ministrator until September 1. Councilor Bruce McNair had previously stated his displeasure with Council’s decision, speaking out on the matter at the July 21 City Council meet- ing. He acted obviously disgruntled at the August 4 meeting as well. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that things are unrav- eling on the City Council, but I would say things are shaky. The Council meet- ing on August 4 was filled with tension. What will be the end result of this City Council decision? My hope was that everyone involved would ac- cept the final Council decision on who Volleyball Skills Clinic For more info: Incoming 6th-9th graders call Head Coach Mon-Wed, August 11,12, & 13! While all the deliberations con- cerning the Council’s choice for a new City Administrator happened in Execu- tive Session and are therefore unreport- able, I will say that the Council took quite a long time reaching a final decision. In the end a majority of the Council voted to extend an offer to Mammone. Now the Vernonia City Council has to find a way to deal with the fallout from their decision. The way the Council handled the process in regards to Mitchell left something to be desired and could have been handled more respectively and with more sensitivity. Though understandably disap- pointed, Mitchell should have known this result was possible when she de- clared her intention to apply for the posi- tion and there could be a difficult transi- tion if she wasn’t hired. august7 Keasey Route 7:05AM Fibre mainline 7:07AM Boeck Rd. 7:15AM Burn Rd. 7:20AM Flack Rd. 7:24AM Eden Rd. 7:26 Stoney Point/Lincoln Rd 7:30AM 2 nd /Nehalem Rd. 7:31AM 3 rd /Nehalem Rd. 7:32AM 5 th and 6 th /Nehalem Rd. 7:33AM 5 th /Bridge St. 7:34AM 4 th /Bridge St. Scappoose Route 7:11AM near 22071 Scap/Vern Hwy 7:17AM Peterson 7:22AM beginning of Stoney Point Rd. 7:26AM Stoney Point/Woods Rd. 7:30AM Stoney Point/Mellinger Rd. 7:31AM G/State St. 7:35AM B/State St. 7:37AM North/State St. Sm. bus Fishhawk 1 st Route 6:25AM Fishhawk Rd. 6:40AM Hwy 202 near Shalmon Libels farm supply 6:45AM near Mist School 6:50AM Mist junction 6:55AM Barkanall to transfer students Sm. bus Fishhawk 2 nd Route 7:10AM end of Fishhawk Rd. 7:35AM near Shalmon Libels farm supply 7:45AM Burris Rd. 7:55AM near Big Eddy Park 8:00AM Crawford Rd. continued from page 3 to offer the position to and continue to work together in a professional manner. Hopefully Mammone will live up to his qualifications and be a good choice. Three of the positions on City Council are up for election this November; the Mayor along with McNair’s and Donna Webb’s Councilor seats. So far both Webb and McNair have indicated unof- ficially that they don’t plan to run again. What Mitchell will do is also up in the air. According to City Recorder Joann Glass, no one else has filed paper work to run. Only time will tell if Council made the right decision and Mammone is the right person for the job. Only Josette Mitchell knows if she can put aside her disappointment and continue to lead the city as Mayor in the way she has proven herself capable of doing. There appears to be a need for the Council to find a way to repair their relationship with Mitchell since they all need to work together un- til at least the end of the year. Hopefully several people step forward and run for City Council in November. Hopefully the rest of the City Council can put aside their differences, help make Mammone feel welcome, and move forward and to- gether with the work of the City. Need more room?
