12 schools march6 2014 VHS Winter Sports Update Girls Basketball-The Lady Loggers record breaking season came to an abrupt halt when they lost in the first round of the State Playoffs, losing at Santiam, 67-37 on February 28. The Lady Loggers finished the year with a 22-3 record, becoming the first girls team in Vernonia school history to win over twenty games in a season. Prior to the State Playoffs the Lady Loggers fell to Portland Christian in the District Championship game, losing 43-23. Following the game Stephanie Castro and Katka Brejchova were both named First Team All League; juniors Julia Fletcher and Meghan Sullivan were named Second Team, Emma D’Onghlia was Honorable Mention. The Lady Loggers went undefeated in the Northwest League play this season, going 16-0 and winning the league title for the second year in a row. Wrestling-The Vernonia Loggers Wrestling team took third place at the District Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Jason Bouslaugh at 132, Damian Young at 145, Michael Bouslaugh at 152 and Samuel Hout at 182, all took second place in the tournament and advanced to the State Tournament the following weekend. The top two finishers in each weight class earn a trip to state. Vernonia saw ten of the eleven wrestlers they entered place in the District Tournament. Jefferey Goodman took fourth at 126; Justin Fletcher took fifth and Andrew Jennings took sixth at 126. Daniel Rice finished fifth at 138. At the State Tournament the Logger wrestlers struggled, with only one wrestler, Hout, advancing into the second day. Hout won his initial match with a pin in the third period, but lost a tough overtime match 3-1 in his second match. Hout was eliminated from the tournament in his third match.
