12 schools february6 2014 VHS Winter Sports Update Girls Basketball- The Lady Loggers have continued their dominance over the Northwest League and remain undefeated in league play with a 13-0 record following a 60-29 win over Knappa on Tuesday, February 4 th . Cheerleading- The Vernonia Cheerleading Squad once again took first place in two recent competitions they entered. Coached by Denise Way- Hacket, the VHS Cheer Competition Squad is made up of Jessica Gardner, Nichole Gardner, Courtney Pasko, Megan Schirmeister, Mikila Solberg, and Alexandria Steffler. Earlier this year the team also took first place at the Laker Rumble in Lake Oswego. The VHS Squad is now preparing for the State Competition on February 15 th at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Meghan Sullivan The Lady Loggers have cruised to eleven straight wins, including a 44-37 win over league rival Portland Christian on January 21, a 74-42 home victory over Delphian, big away wins at Nestucca and Gaston and a 45-35 victory at Riverdale. Daniel Rice is an athletic and excellent technical wrestler who is having a lot of success by following his coaches instructions. Barnes hopes to see big improvements from both of them next season. Damian Young has had some big moments at 145 pounds, pinning some of the top ranked wrestlers in the state. “He has won some big matches and been improving tremendously,” says Barnes. Known for his strong work ethic, Young has been battling a knee injury but is hopefully ready for District where he should compete for a spot at State. Michael Bouslaugh has wrestled at 145 and has also moved up to 152 pounds. Jeff Goodman has the potential to be a very special wrestler who works hard and just needs some more confidence and more “swagger” according to Barnes. Justin Fletcher is a freshman who is naturally athletic and strong who needs to develop his technique. Andrew Jennings is good technically but is still developing physically and just needs to develop more mental determination. Barnes expects big things from all three wrestlers next year and Goodman could be a surprise at the District meet. Jason Bouslaugh has been one of the most improved wrestlers on the team over the last month at 132 pounds. According to Barnes, Bouslaugh is realizing his potential and has a chance to qualify for the state tournament.
