12 schools november21 2013 VHS Fall Sports Wrap Up Volleyball- Head Coach Teresa Williams and the Lady Loggers should be pleased with their season this year. The team finished with a 13-6 record and played some of the best volleyball Vernonia has seen in years. The team qualified for the state playoffs for the third year in a row after finishing third in the 2A Northwest League. “I think the season went better than anticipated,” said Williams. “They all worked well together. Some of my returning players really showed a lot of maturity and more court sense as far as knowing the game.” The Lady Loggers lost to an exceptionally talented Days Creek team in that first round playoff; Days Creek was the eventual 2A State Champion going undefeated in the state tournament without losing a single game. Williams says her challenge moving forward is figuring out how to beat a strong team like Days Creek and advance further in the State tournament. “We will be put into this position again. During our season we didn’t see anyone like Days Creek with that caliber of play.” Williams said she was pleased that she was able to give all her players significant playing time throughout the season. Williams said she was especially pleased with the play of senior Tori Dalebroux in the Days Creek match. “I was really proud of her and was glad that she ended her season the way she did. She brought everything to that game; she came to play and she came to win.” Other players of note for coach Williams this season were junior Julia Fletcher who was named team MVP and Most Inspirational as well as First Team All League. “Julia and Brittany Young put in a lot of time during the summer, more than anybody else.” Williams noted Fletcher’s improved passing; she was the leading passer on the team and also lead the team in digs in addition to being second in kills and third in serving. “Her game really stepped up this year,” said Williams. Young, a junior, was second on the team in serving, really improved her defensive play and played with much more confidence, according to Williams. Senior captain Stephanie Castro was a great leader and presence on the court. Castro lead the team in kills and her competitiveness, understanding of the game and court awareness were real assets for Williams. Sophomore Kassidy Fetch played well on the back line and is expected to be a key player next season. Junior Taylor Titus is a solid setter who Williams thinks was one of the best at her position in the league. Sara-Eve Mayer was a player who Williams said would stay after practice every single day to improve her game. A knowledgeable and determined player with seven years experience, Mayer played great defense and was a leading server and passer. Lilly Lindsey was named Most Improved and played an important role for the team in the second half of the season. A junior this year, she will be a key player on next years squad. “She still has a lot more potential,” said Williams. “Our season was very successful, but we want to be better,” said Williams. Cross Country- Head Coach Byron Brown saw a lot of improvement and really enjoyed working with his team this year. “ I really had a lot of fun watching them get stronger and faster every week,” said Brown. “They were a great group to be around. I hope they had as much fun as I did.” Earning varsity letters for the women’s team were Hannah Fleck, Johanna Lange, Emma D’Onghia, Anastasia Mihalcuic, Laura Rice and Jean Lee. Fleck, Lange and D’Onghia led the girls and usually ran as a group, trading off who would finish first for the team throughout the season. And Mihalcuic, Rice and Lee showed a lot of improvement as the season went on. “As a team I was very happy with them,” said Brown. “None of them, with the exception of Hannah, had ever run competitively before. I think some of them will be life-long runners, and that’s more important really than trophies. Running can become a habit that changes your life.” Fleck was named “Most Inspirational” runner on the team. For the men’s team, receiving varsity letters were Paul Lemaron, Jacob Medaris, Drew Cheney, Dan Rice, Alex Rubiera, Anton Yakovenko, and Emil Hardenberg. Receiving junior varsity letters were Brett Jones and Jarod Shaw. Lemaron led the team all year, showing great determination to get better every race and received the Outstanding Runner” award for the team. “I can’t say enough about his heart and his work ethic,” said Brown. “He is a lot of fun to be around--really I can say that about the continued on page 14 The Melding of Aeris The newest release by Vernonia author Diana Peach.
