4 community bulletin board/letters to the editor july18 2013 Joy Creek Nursery Offers Free Classes Joy Creek believes their classes are a good way for garden- ers of all levels to improve their knowledge of plants and their gar- dening skills. The classes also of- fer an opportunity for gardeners to meet others who share a similar passion. Joy Creek hopes they give confidence to the beginner and in- spiration to the long-time gardener. 1:00 Sunday, July 21 Clematis Introductions: Is Any- thing New Under the Sun? - with Linda Beutler In addition to showing garden- ers the depth and breadth of the genus clematis and how to grow them, the Rogerson Clematis Col- lection (RCC) is involved in trial- ing “new” clematis. Thanks. Randy Carlton Vernonia Fire Volunteer To the Editor, A few years ago, my friend and I traveled to Florence, OR. While there, we took in a show that, quite frankly, has changed my life. We saw Justin Shandor in concert. He’s Elvis Presley Enterprises Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist 2010. He looks like Elvis, he sounds like Elvis and those of us who grew up loving Elvis and his music can’t help but think Elvis has come back to life. Why has this changed my life? In June last year, I was walking the halls of Washington Grade School for the last time with a few of my childhood friends. We shed a tear or two as we took the last steps out of those heavy metal doors surrounded by brick. But then, we had the privilege to meander up the hill and walk through the doors of the new K-12 school. Wow! Imagine being able to attend this beautiful, new, pristine school. It could only be a dream. At the time, teachers were busy painting and preparing all their old bookshelves and desks for the big move from the old schools to the new school. Why do you want to bring mud boots onto new carpet? My mind went PRECIP crazy. Where are the swings? What do children play 0 on during recess? Where is the football field and 0 grandstands that WAS the community when we were 0 growing up? The whole city used to close down when there was a home game. Maybe we could have a fundraiser. Hey, remember that guy who looks like Elvis and sounds like Elvis? Maybe we could get a Las Vegas performer to come to Vernonia Schools. Guess what folks? It’s going to happen! On Saturday, August 3, 2013, the people of Vernonia have the opportunity to have a great time while supporting the children of the community. This will be Jamboree weekend! Time for parades, greasy food, tractor races, gun wielding people in fur coats, logging show events, motorcycles, classic cars & bicycles lining the streets! Up at the beautiful new school, 1000 Missouri Avenue, as part of our 40 th Reunion, the Class of 1973 is sponsoring a “Give Back Bash”. Justin Shandor and his fabulous 8 piece band will entertain you and take you back in time. There will be two shows in the new school Commons. Justin will croon to those who love the Elvis of the 50’s and 60’s at the 2:00 p.m. performance. Then at 6:00 p.m., surely dawning a jumpsuit of some kind, he’ll knock your socks off with some (oh heavens, don’t tell mamma what you saw on the Ed Sullivan Show) gyrating hip movements. It is reserved seating and ticket prices are $15, $25, $35, $50, $75 and $100. You may reserve your seats by calling Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006 or going online to: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/294028. We strongly encourage purchase of tickets prior to the events. If paying at the door, please bring cash! We’ll also have some great things to raffle at the first show. Bring cash! At the end of the concerts, from 8-11:00 p.m., the school will be open for an All Class Alumni Open House where you can tour the school and visit with old friends. I challenge some of my old classmates to put aside politics and come have a good time. I’ve heard from many people that they don’t want to support the schools because they’re being taxed to death and they don’t like the decisions being made by administration. I have lived and breathed this event for the last year working my tail to the bone. If you can’t do it for the kids, would you do it for me? Oh, did I mention? Bring cash! Kathi (Medges) Knowles VHS Class of 1973 Beaverton, OR To the Editor, A humble thank you to people who came out to share in the “YOUR EVENT” at Hawkins Park on July 13th. So many people to thank and you know who you are. The nature of this was not to bring attention to any one person but to celebrate community and maybe offer rest to those who needed it. There were 260 plates of food served and about 300 or so that came through during the day FREE, all were welcomed. The weather was beautiful and so were the people who both served and were served. So, a simple thanks to each of you and thank you God for a wonderful day!
