community june20 The Scuttlebutt - News From Around Our Town Where Do You Read The Voice? Margy Prout recently took a trip to Abilene, Texas to visit with family at the beginning of June, and of course she took along a copy of the Voice. Margy says she went to see her daughter, Kari and her husband Ryan, who is stationed in the Air Force at Dyess AFB. Margy also spent time with her 3 granddaughters there, Avery, Addison and Amelia. Margy says her youngest son, Jason lives there and has 2 kids, Kaden and Raeleigh. She also got to visit her brother Richard and his wife in Arlington, Texas. Margy says she saw some awesome thunder and lightening storms and rain. Luckily no tornadoes. 25th Anniversary of “The Vernonia Incident” This coming year marks the 25th anniversary of a movie called “The Vernonia Incident,” which was filmed in Vernonia in 1989. The movie was shot on 16mm film over a three-week period at a cost of about $67,000 according to its producer, Ray Etheridge. The 70 acting roles were filled entirely with Vernonians, who played “good guys”, “bad guys”, and stunt people. The “shoot ‘em up” plot line involved two thugs who robbed the Sentry Market, and then were chased on back roads by blood-thirsty locals who wanted them dead or alive. County Commissioner Tony Hyde had a major role in the film as one of the “bad guys,” together with Shawn Stevens, Jason Shores, and David Jackson. Some of the major “good guy” roles were played by Floyd Ragner, Ed Justice, Robert Louis Jackson, J. J. Cahill III, and John C. Ragner. The film’s producer, Ray Etheridge, is a 1970 VHS graduate, and worked as a cameraman and editor for KATU News for 13 years. He says that the trailer to “The Vernonia Incident” may be viewed on You Tube, and that there is “a ton of interesting reading” on the film’s website, at http://vernonia.scriptmania.com. Open Air Market is Open Again The Vernonia Open Air Market is open for business once again! The local farmers market has once again changed days and locations. The Open Air Market will be open on Friday’s from 4:00 to 7:00 PM through the end of September this year and has moved to the grassy area behind the Subway shop, next to the Vernonia Post office on Jefferson Avenue. The handful of vendors already have some greens, potatoes, berries and more for sale, as well as plant starters if you haven’t had a chance to start your own garden yet. There is also honey, jams and other homemade specialties a v a i l a b l e , depending on which vendors show up. Each week the vendors have more items available. There is room for the kids to play on the grass and picnic table space, graciously provided Subway. It’s a great place to meet and visit with your friends and neighbors, catch up on the news from around town, purchase some fresh produce and support locally produced products. Summer Meals Program Starts Vernonia children can once again receive free lunches this summer as part of “Summer Meals Program.” A collaborative effort of several groups and organizations, this is the third year for the Summer Meals Program in Vernonia. Lunch is to be served at the Vernonia Community Church, at the corner of State and A Street, from 11:30 AM to 1;00 PM, Monday through Friday. The program started on June 17th and will run through August 16th. Children up to eighteen 2013 23 years old can eat for free, the cost for accompanying adults is $2. In addition to the lunches being served, this year the Vernonia Library will also participate in the program by offering afternoon snacks between 3:30 and 3:45 PM Monday through Friday.
