4 community bulletin board/letters to the editor february21 2013 Readers Lend Their Voices... To the Editor, The dishes are done, the kitchen cleaned and everyone else is in bed for the night. Sleep does not come so easy for me tonight as my mind is off thinking of the yesteryears. I remember when you never gave up the opportunity to read a story to her. I close my eyes and can picture you both laughing and rolling around on the floor while you try to copy the big bad wolf. How you both would huff and puff and pretend to blow the house down, trying to catch your breath because you were laughing so hard. Never did I dream that someone else would come along and teach her how to do a different kind of huffing and puffing. Oh yes it would leave her trying to catch her breath but not because of laughing too hard, but because this kind of huffing and puffing has destroyed the nerves in her brain sending the message to her body to breath. They call it Neuropathy, I can’t believe it even has a name. I close my eyes and see her in the hospital... on life support. I can’t see her pretty face because of all the tubes. They say they don’t know which way this is going to go. They can’t offer any hope all they can do is say, “Talk to her, she might be able to hear you”. I lean over and touch her face, I tell her it’s Nana and that I love her so much. I see a tear roll down the side of her face. I wipe it away wondering, hoping and praying this means she knows it’s me who is there. I think to myself, how could this have happened? Where did things start to go wrong? Who taught her about this kind of huffing and puffing, snorting and injecting? Never believing this kind of Calling All Columbia County Veterans “Honoring Our Heroes” evil would follow her; hound her until she tried it.
