14 schools october23 2012 VHS Fall Sports Report very big team with one really powerful running back and a couple of quick kids,” said Jarmin. “Our kids were able to basically shut them down. ” On offense, the Loggers were able to move the ball but had trouble holding onto the ball in the wet conditions. Jarmin noted the play of Wolf at tight end, who had a long reception and did well blocking, and Tim Jennings at quarterback. The Loggers conclude their season with away games at Neah-Kah- Nie on October 26 and Portland Christian on November 2. If the Loggers qualify, league playoffs begin on November 9. Volleyball—The Lady Loggers are finishing the season strong. Head Coach Teresa Williams and her girls were headed into their final match of the season against Riverdale on October 22 with a five match winning streak after dismantling an overmatched Faith Bible team 3-0 at home on October 18. Currently the Loggers have a 7-4 league record and an 11-6 record overall this season. It looks like they continued from page 13 will finish in third place in the Northwest League East Division behind perennial power Portland Christian and Knappa. “We’re passing the ball much better, so we’re actually running a system and have figured out our offense,” said Williams following the Faith Bible match. “Our setter, Taylor Titus, is a sophomore, and she now has a better understanding of how to run our offense. I think the group of girls we have are meshing and are playing really positively on the floor. They are realizing how to overcome some adversity.” Against Faith Bible the Lady Loggers were dominant in the first game winning 25-5, just as they were a week earlier against Knappa. Senior Sara McMahon once again led the way with a great all around match for the Loggers. Back in her more natural position in the middle of the front line, McMahon was very strong offensively. She also played well in the back line on defense and passed well. Outstanding setting by Taylor, strong outside hitting from Stephanie Castro and Julia Fletcher, and good play in the middle on both offense and defense by Helena Veselkova also set the tone of the match for the Loggers. On the back line the Loggers received strong play from Brittany Young, Samantha Wallace and Titus. Freshman McKenzie Titus also saw some varsity court time and played well. The Lady Loggers used extremely strong serving throughout the match as a good offensive weapon. The Falcons especially had trouble at times handling service from Castro, Veselkova, Wallace, Fletcher and McMahon. With 3-1 victories over Neah- Kah-Nie and Knappa and 3-0 wins over Nestucca and now Faith Bible, the Lady Loggers head into league playoffs, which start October 23, playing their best volleyball in a long time. Hopefully that strong play continues. Cross Country--At the Neah-Kah- Nie Bigfoot Challenge on October 9, Vernonia senior Samantha Lindauer won once again in a tough race and made it look almost easy. The Vernonia Logger girls finished 2nd overall. For the boys, Nathan Fleck finished 5th and Alumni Volleyball Friday, November 16th, 7pm Come watch VHS Alumni take on the 2012 Varsity Volleyball team at the VHS gym. Donations accepted. Both the boys and girls teams won against Warranton, Knappa and Portland Adventist. Nathan Fleck set a personal record of 17:31. Sammy Lindauer won for the girls with a personal best of 20:06. “Almost everyone on the team had PR’s [personal records],” said Loggers head coach Byron Brown. “Hopefully we are peaking at just the right time for the district meet.” The Loggers wind up their season at Tualatin Hills for the District 1 meet which is the state qualifying meet. “We are hoping to repeat and exceed last year’s great performance, when we finished fourth of 14 overall, losing only to 3 of the top 6 teams in the state and eventual state champion Valley Catholic,” said Brown. “We have high hopes for Sammy Lindauer and Nathan Fleck to qualify for the state meet at Lane Community College in Eugene November 3rd.” Boosters Buzz T h e Ve r n o n i a Boosters have a new “Snack Shack Queen.” Allison McLeod has graciously agreed to take over the position currently held by Lisa Brewer, who is retiring after nine years of service.
