I am proud to be a Log- ger!” the colors of the Ukraine flag. Iryna added that she could keep talking about Vernonia. “I love Vernonia. I have only been here two months and I love it here. I think it will be really hard to leave.” Iryna Budkevych is from Ukraine and is living with Jazmine Harper and her family. Iryna is playing varsity volley- ball this fall and says she will try out for basketball in the winter and softball or track in the spring. This is the first time Iryna has ever traveled outside of the Ukraine except for a brief trip to Rus- sia. She says she has many relatives in Oregon and has a had a chance to visit with many of them. She says she loves all the nature in Oregon and thinks it is very beautiful. “There are so many for- ests, it is just magical to us,” says Iryna. She says she especially loves going to the ocean, since she had never seen one before and has visited Seaside several times. Iryna says she likes that in Ver- nonia everyone knows everyone else. “When people talk to you they know who you are, where you are from and who you are staying with. We have ev- erything we need here—we have shops, we have a place where we can play sports, we have a place where we can hang out with our friends. There are not a lot of cars and trucks and the air is fresh and there is not a lot of pollution That’s why I like Vernonia.” Iryna add- ed that she is proud to be a Lady Logger and that she likes Vernonia’s school col- ors of blue and gold because they match Melanie Bonnefoux is from a suburb of Paris, France and is spending her year with the Matt and Susan Blair fam- ily. Melanie is not participating in any fall or winter sports but will be part of the equestrian team in the spring. Melanie has traveled in Europe to England, Ireland, Portugal and Italy and also Thailand and some French Islands like Guade- loupe. Melanie says that Vernonia is very small but in France they also have many small towns. ule, Jarmin’s team had a 3-1 record and were coming off a 51-0 thrashing of Culver on September 28. The Loggers actually lost their first two non league games. They lost a close game to 3A Warrenton, 27-21 and then were defeated in another close game by 3A Gervais; Gervais subse- quently had to forfeit the game because they had used an ineligible player and Vernonia was awarded a 1-0 victory. The Loggers finished out non league play with a 35-14 win over Santiam be- fore their big win over Culver. On October 5 the Loggers took on returning league champions Gaston in their first league game, losing 66-21, dropping their overall record to 3-2. Coach Jarmin says the Loggers have been able to run the ball effec- tively so far this season, with Jonathon Anderson, Mikol Pihl and Bo Clark leading the way. The offensive line has been led by Dawson Shay, Jared Whit- ton, Justin Wolf, Will Parks, Jerimiah Hammons and DJ Grady. The Loggers have also used a spread offense at times, taking advantage of quarterback Tim Jenning’s ability to throw the ball. The Loggers have also used Austin Cutright Stefan Scheer is from the city of Ulm, Germany and is living with Katie and Matt Poetter and their family. Stefan is playing football this fall and will play basketball in the winter and says he wants to try something American so he will try out for baseball in the spring. Stefan has traveled around Europe and to Turkey. This is Stefan’s first time in the U.S. He said he enjoyed the trip with other exchange students to play paint- ball. “The people here in Vernonia are nice and the area is nice,” says Stefan. He is a bright and capable student who works hard to do his best on his assign- ments. He also gets along well with everyone. He is definitely an outstanding 5th grader! Kale says his favorite subject in school is reading and he also enjoys writing. Kale raised a pig for 4-H this year and won Grand Champion at the Columbia County Fair. He also spent some time at outdoor camp this summer. Kale says he also likes to play basketball. Hepner Forster , Grade 6 Hepner just arrived at the Vernonia School this year from Mist. Jacob Medearis , Grade 11 Jacob has been extremely helpful during after school activities. He has volunteered to help set up and take down chairs and other equipment. He always jumps in and asks if he can help even before being asked. Jacob says his favorite subject in school is Band; he plays the trombone and last year won first place in the district competition and was part of the group that won the State Championship. When Cutright is not playing quarterback Jarmin has used him at tight end where he has been very effective. Jake Titus and Jesse Edgar at wideout are both fast and have been good targets for the Loggers. T John Wolf has also played extremely well at tight end, catching the ball and block- ing and has also excelled at middle line- backer on defense. “Against Culver we used the spread offense in order to get our best play makers on the field,” said Jarmin of Jennings and Cutright. “We can’t have one of them playing quarterback and the other sitting on the sidelines if they are both good athletes. So what we do is put Cutright in as a receiver and throw him the football where he is able to use his speed to make some good plays for us.” The Loggers will travel to Nes- tucca on October 12 and then return home on October 19 to face Knappa in the Homecoming Game. The Log- gers finish their regular season with two away games against Neah-Kah-Nie on October 26 and at Portland Christian on November 2.
