6 area news september11 2012 Another Round: More Words of Wisdom About Beer By Scott Laird “The govern- ment will fall that raises the price of beer.” ~Czech saying Better Late Than Never—In case you haven’t noticed, here at Another Round, we’ve been finding it hard to make time to write about drinking beer. Just in case you were worried, we have not stopped drinking beer—we just stopped writing about it. You see, I’m a bit of a procrastinator and sometimes things get put off so that there is only time to do the things that have to get done, not the things that you would like to do. Appar- ently I have to drink beer; I only like to write about it. Now that Labor Day has come and gone it time to finally get around to writing about some summer beers we found this year to try. Hopefully this won’t be too late for you—I know I’m counting on a nice long Indian Summer this year. Take a look around, maybe you can still find a couple of these Or- egon beers and enjoy them during a sun- ny afternoon. Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City is bottling their Surfer’s Summer Ale. This 22oz bottle poured with a thick, creamy head and had a fruity aroma. A citrus, grapefruit taste with malty, undertones provided for a nicely balanced beer with a crisp clean finish. Tailgater, a Kolsch Style Ale from Flattail Brewing in Corvallis poured with a somewhat thin head and was nicely balanced between maltiness and hops. A nice summer ale at 5.5% ABV. Grab a couple of these before you sit down to watch an early season Bea- vers game. Laurelwood Brewing Com- pany has brewed a NW Pilsner called Portlandia Pils. This one is worth checking out just for the label, but the beer is pretty good to. The thick, creamy head lasted a long time and the deep golden color was beautiful. The nose was citrus, the taste slightly hoppy with a grapefruit finish. This beer was heartier than most Lagers, but at 5.5% ABV, you could have a few. If you ‘ve read this column before you know that we like our dark beers here at Another Round, so just for good measure we threw one in. Paul’s Porter from Long Brewing in Newburg was a robust ale that poured nicely and was very dark. Complex flavors with black licorice finish. A nice beer for a cool August evening. Or September. In Case You Needed Another Reason...I just received a great little video that someone shared with me on Facebook that shows chefs for President Obama brewing beer in the White House kitchen. Apparently the Pres has his own line of brews, “White House Beer,” that are made for him in small batches, Vernonia Hardware and SuPPly 1026 Bridge St. Vernonia, or Mon–Thurs 9–6, Fri–Sat 9–7 Sun 12–5 ored tradition of homebrewing. The recipes come from a local brewmaster in Washington D.C., which the White House chefs adapted. So now you have another rea- son to consider re-electing President Obama in November. With PaintCare ® , recycling unwanted paint is simple and convenient. Here’s how: When you buy a gallon of new paint, $0.75 of the purchase price funds the cost of recycling your old leftover paint. (For quarts it’s $0.35, five gallons is $1.60). When you no longer need it, simply take it to any of our drop-off sites for no additional charge. You’re done. We’ll take it from there. The program is for both households and businesses. Please check with the drop-off site before bringing more than 15 gallons. Please do not bring paint thinner, aerosols or empty paint cans. Empty cans may be placed in your regular trash (or recycling if allowed in your area). Remove lids so your trash collector knows they are empty. Buy right. Use it up. This group was formed to spearhead a process of renewed communication and cooperation in Vernonia under the guidance of a Ford Family Foundation program called “Pathways to Community Vitality.” In the Spring of 2012 a group of 125 Vernonia citizens responded to an online survey to begin the process of gauging our current Community Vitality. After several training sessions in Vernonia, based on information gathered from this inventory, this group now is moving forward. This effort, called Vernonia Connects, aims to: Strengthen our community vitality by building communication, connectivity and collaboration among local leaders, organizations and community members. Vernonia Connects has created and is currently working on two initiatives for this fall. The first initiative is called “Community Conversations.” A survey conducted during the Vernonia Schools Grand Opening celebration and the Vernonia Night Out event, submitted by 130 residents, shows a definite need for a series of discussions on various topics. The community is invited to participate in structured discussions about topics of current interest and concern. The intent of these events is to create change within the community through frank dialog and the sharing of accurate information. Plans currently call for four “Community Conversations” events to be held in the upcoming months. The second initiative calls for the creation of a “Community Network” which would bring together community organizations to strengthen community life and build a better and brighter future for Vernonia. Representatives of local groups are being invited to come together regularly--monthly or quarterly, still to be determined--to share future plans, needs and opportunities to coordinate. The goal is to reduce duplication of efforts, increase volunteer involvement and make the best use of resources. The group has pledged to honor the mission of each organization involved and seek to facilitate networking between local groups. The expected outcome is a community-wide network that keeps ideas flowing and helps Vernonia move forward. If you are interested in working on either of these two initiatives or would like more information about “Vernonia Connects” please contact Scott Laird about “Community Conversations at 503-367-0098 or mrscottlaird@yahoo.com, or DeAnna Pearl about “Community Network” at 503-369-7370 or DeAnna@vernonia- or.gov.
