14 community news september11 2012 Church News and Events By Mark Brown “A lesson from the Fish” I walked down to the river yesterday morning. The fog was from the ground to just above the tree line. I looked up at the moon it was bright, three quarters full. The hue around it said once it burned off it looked to be a beautiful day and it was. As I walk under the canopy of the trees at the river’s edge I caught a glimpse of something in the water. It was a single salmon making its way back to the beginning. I felt rain drops falling lightly around me, but it was not raining. The moisture from the cold nights had collected and began to fall. I watched the salmon for a moment; it made me sad and gave me hope all at the same time. I wondered how far she had journeyed, where she came from. I wondered if she knew just how close she was to her journeys end; both her task and her life. I hoped she knew her place of origin was just a few miles away in comparison from where she must have begun. It seemed as though the trees might have been crying for her, it was only raining in that one place. I know I am at a sensitive season in my life and I am like the salmon both filled with hope and sadness. Hope for what tomorrow might bring, sad for what I knew I might have missed. Hope that I will remain able to see the things in life that I missed as a youth. Sad I did not see them earlier. Senior Center Activities 5-Area Luncheon: Monday, Septem- ber 24 at the Clatskanie Senior Center Connie’s Fabulous Breakfasts: Fabu- lous breakfasts are available to the pub- lic on Fridays for a cost of only $3.50. The event happens at the Vernonia Se- nior Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30 to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price includes a beverage, too. Enter through the side, parking lot door. What a deal! Week Day Lunches: The Vernonia Se- nior Center offers nutritious and tasty lunches each weekday for a $4 donation for seniors over 60; cost is $5 for any- one under 60. To-go meals are avail- able for $5. These are available to the public, not just Senior Citizens. (Meal- time is noon; late arrivals may not be served.) You can reserve your lunch by calling by 11:15 AM, or further in ad- vance if possible, to assist the cooks as they prepare the day’s meals. Meals on Wheels are available for a $4 donations for seniors over 60. Please contact the Senior Center for an application. Maple Bars available locally! Connie King, the cook at the Senior Center, is making maple bars each day. The maple bars are available to the public, too, and only cost $1 each. Availability is sub- ject to quantity on hand. You can assure yourself of a good supply by pre-order- ing them directly from Connie by call- ing the Senior Center (503-429-3912) any week day, from 7:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one day lead time for larger orders. The Center’s front door opens at 9:00, but the side parking lot door opens at 7:00. Ah, sweet treats! Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in their Thrift Store. The retail store is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift Store provides funds for the Senior Center’s facility and its many activi- ties. Donations can also be dropped off during those same hours, and donated clothes need to be clean and in good condition so they are “sales ready”. We are offering half off during the first week of each month. Buy locally and support your local Senior Center. For after hours drop-offs please con- tact Pauline 503-429-5810. Special Days: On the last Wednesday of the month Wauna Credit Union will be serving ice cream. On the last Fri- day of the month we will serve birth- day cake and ice cream to celebrate that month’s birthdays. Membership Dues: Another way to support Vernonia’s Senior Center is to pay the $15 annual membership dues. Checks may be mailed or dropped off at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and older may join. The salmon reminded me; any old fish can swim downstream, go with the flow. But life is at its best when we go against the flow fighting to get back to the place that is home in our hearts and minds, wherever that may be for each of us. That salmon wants to go home, so do I. God is good, I must admit yet I often ask the question. God, will it be today? May we have the desire the salmon do to return home, to our place of belonging; where we began. In the arms of a loving God, Jesus I’m like a child in need of His Fathers loving arms. Aren’t we all when we think about it? Pioneer Baptist Fellowship: Beginning Sunday, June 24th, Pioneer Baptist will meet at 6:00 PM in the Vernonia Foursquare Church (850 Madison Ave.). This schedule will remain in place through the summer. Interpretive Programs at Stub Stewart are held from Wednesday through Sunday. Programs are open to campers as well as day-use visitors.
