6 area news august14 2012 VHS Volleyball St. Helens Backpack Program Receives Start-up Prepares for Upcoming Season Boost From Credit Union Battery Collection as Team Fundraiser In these hard economic times, it is often children who suffer the most when a family is struggling to make ends meet. Nearly 50 percent of children enrolled in the St. Helens Elementary Schools are receiving free or reduced price meals during the school year. For many of these children, these meals might be the most substantial meals they get during the week. On weekends, when school meals are not available, many children go hungry. Hungry children are sick more often, and experience more learning problems than children who are getting enough to eat, making it difficult for them to succeed at school. A volunteer committee established earlier in 2012 has been working diligently to implement a new program that will serve the students of St. Helens School District elementary schools. The Backpack Program will provide bags filled with child-friendly, non-perishable food that children take home on the weekends (during the school year) in their backpacks. The St. Helens Backpack program is currently established as a local member agency of Columbia Pacific Food Bank a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. The program is scheduled to kick-off October 2012. On March 15, 2012 St. Helens Community Federal Credit Union, through its community outreach program CU 4 A CAUSE, announced a donation match up to $5000 for all funds deposited to the St. Helens Backpack Program through March 31, 2012. The total sum donated by March 31st was $1684.50 adding in the donation match from SHCU the total amount raised for the program is now close to $3400. Additional funds are still needed to pilot this program for 20 students at each elementary school during the 2012-2013 school year. The credit union will continue to raise awareness and funds for the program through the CU 4 A CAUSE community outreach program. Food drives will be held at First United Methodist Church. Businesses or individuals in Columbia County can sponsor a child for an entire year for just $250. Businesses that sponsor a child receive a banner ad and link to their website on the CU 4 A CAUSE website sponsor page for an entire year. In conventional research circles, weight loss is most successful with cardiovascular fitness that increases your heart rate, a minimum of 3 days per week, at a sustained intensity of 30 or more minutes. While this is generally effective at keeping the weight off (or dropping a few pounds), there is also research that suggests weight gain happens as a result of increased stress, and how one responds to that stress. Generally speaking, when we are stressed out, we exhibit “stress response” behaviors. Such responses might include reactive behaviors that may make us feel better in the short run, but do little to no good in the long run. Examples of these types of reactive behaviors include over-eating, eating emotionally (when sad, anxious, or depressed), or simply not being mindful about when the tummy is full, and therefore consuming just a little too much too often: a.k.a. putting on weight. Research suggests that one of the benefits of yoga is “increased mindfulness,” which essentially is a training of the mind and body, to help us lay down neurological pathways that result in making more thoughtful choices, (including what we put in our mouth) and taking better care of our bodies, (which results in taking better care of those we love). Being more mindful means we are more kind to ourselves and to others, and have fewer moments where we say to ourselves, “Darn! Why did I eat/drink/say/ do that?” So, not only does yoga improve your health, it also has the potential to slim down your waist line. There’s the “skinny” on yoga. VHS Cross Country Practice to Start August 20 Old Grads Picnic August 19 The “Skinny” On Yoga Britt B Steele, MPH, teaches yoga at the Vernonia Grange, every Tue, Thr, and Sat morning at 7:30 AM.
