Thank you to my host families the Scheuermans and the Shipleys for giving me a great opportunity and an amazing experience. I believe that we have excellent staff members who care a great deal about every student. I also know from personal experience in the classroom, that we, as teachers must treat each student a little differently, otherwise we would not be able to help them grow as individuals. Every one of us has personal strengths and weaknesses, whether we are teachers or parents. It is my job to help our staff grow as well as our students, and in order to do that I need feedback from you as parents. I would encourage any student or parent who feels that there is any kind of issue developing at school for their child to contact us. I ask that you address the issue at the lowest possible level with those closest to the problem, because they are also most likely to be best able to find a solution. If you have a concern about your child’s grades or the way your student is being treated in a classroom, please contact the teacher directly, either by email or phone. If you do not hear back from the teacher within 48 hours please feel free to share your concerns with the building administrator. This same guideline applies to concerns that you might raise with a building administrator, once you have contacted them about a concern and you have not been contacted or the issue has not been resolved within 48 hours (or at most a week), please feel free to contact me at ken.cox@vernonia.k12.or.us or 503- 429-5891 and share your concerns. I am fairly busy at this time of year, but I am never too busy to meet with a parent or concerned citizen. My greatest concern is that some issues have not been mentioned because it wasn’t that big a deal at the time, and then it happens again, and pretty soon it has become a big deal that should have been addressed much sooner. Please let me know if you have a concern about our schools before it gets to be a big deal. I am here, and I am willing to listen. When someone takes the time to come and visit with me, I take the time to listen. I usually take some notes and may even ask some questions to make sure I understand the situation. I do not try to defend anyone, I am gathering information. I will take a phone number where I can contact them and then I talk to those staff involved to gather more information.
