6 may8 community news 2012 Announcing the: Upper Nehalem Watershed Council Annual Meeting 10:00 AM Saturday, May 19th At the Vernonia Grange Hall 375 North St. Vernonia, OR Our Mission: To foster stewardship and understanding of the natural resources of the Upper Nehalem Watershed among the stakeholders of the watershed communities in order to protect, conserve, restore and sustain the health and functions of the watershed. Our Goal: A balanced ecosystem that supports a healthy watershed that provides for an economic base and viable watershed communities. Please come to hear and see what we have accomplished in the watershed over the last year and let us know what you would like to see done in the future. We will be electing steering committee members and are looking for people who would like to help with: Fund development (work with executive director to develop new sources of funding, grant writing, getting other organizations to contribute or “match” funds and maybe get involved in holding an annual fundraising event.) Public relations and/or volunteer coordination (promoting our cause, doing the footwork on and involving people in events like the Salmon Festival etc.) Partnerships (people who would represent organizations or groups that could provide viable partnership contributions such as City, County, Timber companies, State or Federal organizations, Business owners, etc.) If you have a little free time and would like to be involved in making your watershed a better place for all, please step forward. There are 3 people up for reelection and we have an additional 4 spaces on the committee that we are seeking community representatives for. Linear Trail Brave Run is June 2 nd The Linear Trail Brave Run will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 in Banks, Oregon. The 5K/10K Run/Walk and Kids Dash starts at Banks High School Track, at 450 S. Main Street in Banks. The event continues out and back on the Linear Trail to finish at Banks High School Track. Most of the course runs along the paved, flat and scenic Linear Trail. Aid stations and traffic control are provided. Starting times are as follows: 7:00 AM-- Check-in/Same day registration begins ; 8:30 AM-- Free Kids Dash (up to age 12); 9:00 AM-- 5k/10k Race begins This 2 nd annual event supports Banks Elementary school technology fund. Your support will make a huge difference for the school. The 2012 theme is “Lace’em up and Run Like a Rock Star” – so make it fun and dress up! A Correction Derek Handegard On the Shelves - What’s Happening at the Vernonia Library On Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m., there will be an informal gathering of anyone who is interested in growing and/or cooking with herbs. If you have grown and used herbs or if you just have a desire to learn about them, please come and share your knowledge or your questions in the meeting room of the Vernonia Public Library. Contrary to what we reported in our April 24, 2012 issue, Derek Handegard of Vernonia did run in and complete the Vernonia Half Marathon on Saturday April 21, 2012. Handegard finished 22 nd overall out of 371 runners with a time of 1:34:30 and was 2 nd in the Men’s 40-44 category. Our sincere apologies to Mr. Handegard and his family for this oversight.
