6 community news april24 2012 CASA Tea Celebrates 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage in Oregon CASA for Kids, Inc. will host its second annual vintage fashion presentation and tea on Saturday, May 5, at the Columbia Shrine Center, 315 N. 18th in Saint Helens. In celebration of 100 years of women’s suffrage in Oregon, this year’s theme will be Fashion Before Freedom. Vintage fashion collector and author LaRee Johnson of Astoria will attend the tea in the persona of Oregon suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway and give an entertaining and informative presentation using original garments and accessories from the late 19 th and early 20th centuries. The two-course tea, catered by Blackbird Catering, begins at 2:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to wear hats and/or vintage attire. “Our Fashion Before Freedom Tea will honor the efforts of our foremothers to take a more active role in public life—efforts that set the stage for women over the decades to become involved in many causes, including advocating for abused children,” said CASA executive director Kathryn Bourn. Proceeds from the tea will benefit the local CASA program, which provides volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children in the foster-care system. In her portrayal of Duniway, Johnson will be attired from head to toe in authentic 1910s clothing, including underpinnings. Using original pieces from her extensive vintage clothing collection, Johnson will illustrate how women’s fashions became less restrictive and cumbersome after women got the vote and became more active outside the home. Johnson is the author of “Ladies’ Vintage Accessories,” a 333-page comprehensive value and identification guide in hardback on ladies accessories from mid-1800s to modern times; she is a member of the Costume Society of America. Johnson will explore why the women of Oregon gained the right to vote eight years before the rest on the nation, in what other ways does Oregon lead the way on progressive issues, what responsibilities went along with the rights women gained in 1920, and how women can make a difference today. “We hope to answer some of these questions, as this program is designed to be informative, as well as entertaining. Fashion tells us a lot about the lives of women in times past,” Johnson said. Duniway’s family crossed the Oregon Trail when she was 18. She married a year later. Early in her marriage, her husband became disabled, and Duniway supported her family by teaching, running a millinery shop, writing novels, and publishing The New Northwest, a weekly newspaper dedicated to advocating for women’s rights, including suffrage. Her fight for women’s suffrage in Oregon lasted nearly 40 years and brought her into the circles of nationally known suffragists like Susan B. Anthony and Anna Howard Shaw. Blackbird Catering is planning a two-course menu of savories and sweets for the tea. The first course will feature cucumber watercress sandwiches, puff pastry BLT (with a vegetarian option), onion galettes, polenta tart, basil- Asiago, apple-cheddar, and blueberry- thyme scones. The second course will feature mini fruit tartlets, cream wafers, petite apple strudel and pot de creme au chocolat. The event also will feature a silent auction, featuring art, custom- made jewelry and accessories, vintage pieces, and other items, and a balloon raffle. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the St. Helens Book Store, Bertucci’s Chocolates in St. Helens, or online at www.firstgiving.com/casaforkidsinc/ foundation-of-fashion-tea. Limited tickets are available. LaRee Johnson of Astoria will attend CASA’s Fashion Before Freedom Tea in the persona of Oregon suffragist Abigail Scott Duniway and give a presentation using original garments and accessories from the 1880s to 1930s. I want to take a moment to make a retraction and an apology for information that was not correct concerning admission prices for a couple of advertised events, including our upcoming concert on May 5th. These mistakes were NOT the fault of the newspaper or their staff. These were my mistakes. While not an excuse, I have been very busy trying to schedule and reschedule concerts before the end of the year, and it has not been easy. In the process of my being distracted, incorrect information got released. Please accept my apologies, and note the accurate information below. Thank you for being so supportive of the band program here in Vernonia. May 5: “An Evening with Oscar” Music Extravaganza Advanced Tickets: Adults-$8 At the Door: Adults-$10 Students/Seniors-$5 At the Door: Students/Senors-$7 *There will be a family maximum of $30 for the entire immediate family. Free childcare will be provided for children under 6 who are potty-trained. We ask that, if your young children cannot sit still for an hour-long concert, that you either arrange for sitting, or use our free service that night in the band room. This is a fund-raiser for the band, which is why we are charging for this concert. Because of the nature of the program (which I will not divulge--I don’t want to ruin any surprises!) there are expenses we will incur in order to provide you with a fun evening out. And please, feel free to dress up as if you were attending the Academy Awards! Tickets can be purchased at True Value Hardware, The School District Office, or the Band Room. Also, incorrect information was reported concerning the OSAA State Band Championship on May 10 in Corvallis--the actual cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
