12 community news march27 2012 Church News and Events By Mark Brown Hello my friends, Someone challenged me to show/prove the existence of God; I understand the arguments and discus- sion that can come. I gave it some thought and prayer and this is what was put on my heart. For us who know Him rela- tionally this is easy, with the desire to spend time with Him like you would your best friend, because He is; as well as God! But to a person who does not know Him it is not the same. May I encourage you to consider this? Go online, Google the human body with all of its parts and systems working together, espe- cially the youth! Then stand in front of a full length mirror and look at yourself with the full knowledge of what is going on inside you. With the scientific facts before you in all the wonder that is you, think about this~ there has never been another you or ever will be again. You are unique, set apart from all creation in that you can reason and have free will to choose life or death. After you have done this sit quiet within yourself, allow your mind to search your heart with no other outside influence to give you bias. You may not find God there but to deny what His spirit has woven into our spirit, our being; is simply to deny the truth....... that too is our choice! Theology: The study of God, His nature with intent to know Him; his character and attributes. The Greek word to know is one referring to knowing with intimately. To know God! The difference between know Him and knowing about Him: 85-95% of Americans will say if asked, I am a Christian. When asked if they read the Bible, believe it is the word of God, that they base their way of life on the precepts and teaching of God’s word because they know (Greek know) Him. It falls to 3%. To see other topics covered and talked about, you only have to let me know. I would love to have your participation. Question: How can the church help you? Meet Your Police: Vernonia Police Chief Michael Conner continued from page 3 ment activation of any sort. But the structure is still basically the same. So I feel confident in being able to handle and manage a large scale event. I mean, how comfortable can we really get? And unfortunately our success is really dependent on the staff available. None of us could handle it ourselves. That’s why we are very community dependent. That’s why our CERT Team is so important—we are cur- rently working to re-establish a good working relationship with our Community CERT team members and provide some training so we have some additional resources.” Conner says he believes Vernonia is somewhat unique in the way the citizens han- dle adversity. “Most people, in the event of an emergency, really pull together and help each other out.” Conner says he knows Vernonia is not completely ready to deal with a major disaster. “We’re trying to get some structures in place that will help us know where we need to go first, who we need to help first and where our vulnerable community members are. We need to structure our resources so we know where to send them first. Will we be one hundred percent prepared? I don’t think we can ever be one hundred percent prepared for every event. What we can do is get resources here. In the event that something happens, we are prepared as possible. And that’s what we’re working towards--paying attention to the early warning signs and reacting appropriately.” Conner reinforced his hope to create an atmosphere of trust and openness at the VPD. “When those questions come up, pick up the phone and give me a call,” he says. “If they have a question about what one of the officers are doing or what I’m doing or why something is happening or the way it is happening, ask the question. And if I can provide the answer, I will. Sometimes there are questions about criminal cases and I can’t discuss those until they become public record and they have to go through the process. But when there are questions, concerns or even complaints, I want people to come and let me know what their perception is. Maybe I can change their per- ception or maybe I find out the department has failed in some way-- I need to know that so I can fix the problem.” Questions?
