VHS Band Wins League, Qualifies for State
 
The  Vernonia  High  School  Band 
won the Northwest League Band Festival 
on March 8, 2012 and has qualified for the 
State Contest in May.
 
According to Band Instructor Rob 
Izzett,  the  VHS  Band  received  scores  of 
85, 86, and 87, which was higher than any  
other  school,  including  3A  schools  at  the 
competition.  This was a big improvement 
over  the  previous  year  when  VHS  was 
chosen  to  attend  State  from  a  pool  based 
on receiving two scores of 75.
 
In  addition,  several  weeks  ago  a 
number of Vernonia High School students 
competed at the district #3 solo/ensemble

The following students represented  
VHS  at  the  district  competition  and 
qualified for state:
Jacob Medearis - trombone - 1st place 
Jackson Miller - trombone - 2nd place 
Sarah Wagner - Tuba - 2nd place 
Nate Izzett - Marimba - 1st place 
 
Brandon  Krause  and  Jacob 
Medearis  performed  a  Euphonium/
Trombone  duet  and  scored  high  enough 
to qualify for State, but they do not accept 
this type of ensemble at the State level.
 
Band  Instructor  Rob  Izzett  also 
wished to  acknowledge  foreign exchange 
student  Iryna  Verhogliad  who  was  the 
piano  accompanist  for  Sarah  Wagner’s 
tuba solo.

Carreon  has  been  awarded 
the  Good  Citizen  Award 
by  the  St.  Helens  Chapter 
of  the  Daughters  of  the 
American Revolution.

rewards  high  school 
seniors  who  possess  good 
citizenship  qualities  of 
dependability, 
service, 
leadership,  and  patriotism  VHS student Crystal Ann Carreon was
awarded the Daughters of the American

Carreon attended a ceremony with her family and VHS 
Principal  Nate  Underwood,  where  she  received  her  award  and 
read her  essay she had written for the competition.
