schools november22 2011 Vernonia Band Introduces SCRIP Program as Fundraiser The Vernonia Band has kicked off its SCRIP fund raising program. Here is how the SCRIP pro- gram works. Look over the order form with over 200 businesses from which to choose. If you find anywhere you rou- tinely shop, simply purchase the SCRIP gift card for the specific amount from VHS Band. You then use your SCRIP just like cash. It is good at any loca- tions of that business, and it never ex- pires. The great thing about this is that you are not being asked to spend a penny more than you would normally spend at these locations. And the band keeps a predetermined percentage of what you purchased. And they don’t have to wait for a check from those businesses either. It is an instant money-maker. With the district budget issues, this is a great opportunity to keep this program running strong. This is your opportunity to show your appreciation for the band program and all that they have and continue to do for this community. This is a group that has twice hosted The Dallas Brass; trav- eled to Disneyland to perform; and also gone on a spring break tour of northern California, performing at several stops. This is also a group that will be march- ing in the Portland Macy’s Parade for the fourth straight year, as well as providing entertainment from the stands at both football and basketball games. Williams will lose three key seniors, but she has a very strong core group of returning players including two time all league standout Sara McMahon. The Lady Loggers have a lot to look forward to next season and should have a legitimate shot at competing for a league, and even state title. Cross Country—It was a very good year for head coach Byron Brown and his Cross Country program. The Loggers won the league title and junior Nathan Fleck won the individual title. Brown was named Boys Coach of the Year at the District meet, where both his girls and boys finished 4 th as a team. Brown had a huge turnout with twenty-seven runners this season and has a lot to look forward to next year with Fleck returning, along with his best girls runner, Rowan Cheney. Weller Named VHS Head Boys Basketball Coach David Weller has been named head varsity boys basketball coach at Vernonia High School. Weller served as head coach for the VHS junior varsity team for the past several years and assistant coach to the varsity. “David knows the kids and was the best candidate that we thought could fulfill the role as head basketball coach,” said Vernonia Athletic Director Gordon Jarman. “He has been in our program for years, is a former player here and I think he deserves a shot. He was our top choice and I think he will do a great job.” According to Jarman, Weller will be assisted by volunteer coach Matt Blair, and newly hired JV coach Doren Lower.
