School-based Clinics Get Mental Health Grant Columbia County’s two School- based Health Clinics (SBHC) will get a boost for mental health services for children with a grant from PacificSource Charitable Foundation. Sherrie Ford, SBHC coordinator for The Public Health Foundation of Columbia County, announced Monday that a grant of $30,000 would be divided between Sacagawea Health Center, serving the St. Helens School District, and the Rainier SBHC, that serves students from the Rainier and Clatskanie school districts. Ford said that Sacagawea expanded to include mental health services in 2005 in response to an overwhelming need. This year, without the new grant funding, those services would have to be scaled back. $20,000 of the grant will be used to supplement the Mental Health Therapist position at Sacagawea. Rainier’s SBHC has been operating since 2009 and understands the dire need for mental health service, said Ford. These funds will allow them to add new services to meet the need. At Rainier the grant will also be used to supplement a mental health therapist. Ford said the clinics serve all children within their district boundaries. St. Helens School District has approximately 4,200 students and the Rainier clinic serves 1,960 students from Clatskanie and Rainier combined.
