Voice Vernonia Bear Creek 10K/5K Run/Walk Event Planned Mark your calendars – August 13, 2011, is the date for the ninth annual Bear Creek Run/Walk. Beginning and ending at Anderson Park, this event boasts the diversity of a 5K Run/Walk including a scenic lap around Vernonia Lake, and a 10K Run that heads south along the Banks/Vernonia Linear Trail. Both routes are flat, fast and wind through tree-lined sections of the trail, providing welcome shade for runners & walkers alike. This event is a fundraiser for the Vernonia Cares Food Bank – an organization that has supported local families for the past 26 years. Many local businesses have already received letters reaching out for sponsorship and support of this event. The food bank appreciates the financial sponsorship received during the past eight years from businesses, both local and outside of Vernonia. This year shows a sponsorship total of $1100 so far. Great start! How can you help? Become a sponsor, enter the race as an individual or group, come and cheer on those who run or walk or better yet, volunteer on race day! There are many volunteers needed to make this event a success, so please help out if you can! It is said that charity begins at home – this is a chance to role model this through all levels of support for this event. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM on August th 14 at the Anderson Park pavilion, in Vernonia, with the events starting at 9:00 AM – a little later than last year. Online registration is encouraged. Watch for more local advertising and race registration forms in the days ahead. See the following website for more details; http://www.signmeup.com/75917 or contact Kellie Murray, Race Director at (503) 429-3021. It is the Food Bank’s hope that the 2011 Vernonia Bear Creek Run will be a memorable event benefiting Vernonia residents both young and old alike. It has the potential to bring visitors and consumers to our beautiful town, generating local revenue plus heightened awareness of our lovely forested trails and parks. See you at the starting line! Come Join the Seventh Day Adventist Church’s 75 Year Celebration It all began in 1935 when Pastor Ray Badgley held meetings in a deserted store on Bridge Street. While serving in Vernonia, Pastor Badgley also traveled to Astoria, Long Beach, Wa. and Seaside for services. The year was 1936 when the building of our little church began, located to this day on 2nd and Nehalem. The sweat and time of volunteer labor and a vigorous fundraiser of fudge selling to the surrounding towns was how the church began it’s erection. Being a lumber town, the lumber was donated by Mr. Bennett who at the time owned and operated the third largest mill in the world and who later became a church member. This was during the Depression era, money was very tight, and the mill and the logging industry was shut down for most of the time. The church was finally completed and organized on July 25, 1936 with a dedication on January 17, 1937 debt-free. It is now 75 years later and we invite the community to share God’s love with us. Sabbath School starts at 9:30am Worship Services at 11:00am A celebration of food, music and fellowship at Hawkins Park on Saturday July 9, 2011starting at 12:30 PM.
