program is sponsored by Oregon Citizen Corps with the
mission of Building and Strengthening Disaster Readiness
Among Neighbors.
Kathleen Hendrickson and Diane Dillard
volunteered to become the neighborhood coordinators
assisted by Fire Chief Jay Tappan, who invited local

presenters included Anne Parrott, Public Health
Emergency Preparedness coordinator and CERT team
members under the leadership of Holly Haebe and Nancy
Harwood.
Attendees learned of the importance of preparing
an emergency kit that includes water, prescription

flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, whistle, dust
mask, sanitary supplies, wrench to turn off utilities and can opener for food. Other
reminders include pet food, children’s toys, cash, matches, fire extinguisher, gloves,
hard hat and generator.
Perhaps one of the most informative items was that residents need to register
their cell phones with 911 so they can be included in the Columbia Alert Network
