6 community news may10 2011 Vernonia Community Reads Another Way the River Has has been chosen for Vernonia’s Community Reads for 2011. The author, Robin Cody, will be at the Vernonia Library Wednesday, May 11 at 7:00 PM to discuss his writing. Copies of this book as well as his others, Voyage of a Summer Sun and Ricochet River are available in the library to read prior to this visit. Books may be purchased by interested individuals prior to or during this event. Refreshments will be served and the public is encouraged to attend this informal discussion with Mr. Cody. Junior Salmon Auction Come early! Bid often! The Junior Salmon Auction, a yearly fund raiser for Vernonia High School, will be held at the Vernonia Grange May 20 th at 7:00PM. Approximately thirty- five individually decorated salmon will be up for auction. Under the direction of Vernonia High School Art teacher Linda Allen, students were given a blank cutout of a salmon silhouette approximately 9” high by 23” long. Blanks were cut out at school from materials donated by Vernonia Hands- On Art Center. Starting bids will be $10.00. Last year this event netted over $600.00 for the Vernonia Arts programs. For more info or to volunteer contact: Erika Paleck: 503-704-5970 epaleck@gmail.com Logging Show at Camp 18 Camp 18 will again host a Logging Exhibition featuring area high school forestry program student teams and local logging contractors. The event will be held on Saturday May 14, starting with a dedication of the Loggers Memorial at 10:00 AM. The Logging Exhibition will follow, starting at 10:45, with competitions in Tree Climbing, Choker Setting, Double Bucking, Log Rolling and Loader Operator Competition. Registration for the competitions starts at 9:00 AM. Camp 18 is located on Highway 26 at milepost 18. Senior Center Activities 5-Area Luncheon: Monday, May 30th at the Vernonia Senior Center at 9:00, but the side parking lot door opens at 7:00. Ah, sweet treats! Connie’s Fabulous Breakfasts: Fabulous breakfasts are available to the public on Fridays for a cost of only $3.50. The event happens at the Senior Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30 to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price includes a beverage, too. Enter through the side, parking lot door. What a deal! Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in their Thrift Store. The retail store is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift Store provides funds for the Senior Center’s facility and its many activi- ties. Donations can also be dropped off during those same hours, and do- nated clothes need to be clean and in good condition so they are “sales ready”. We are offering half off dur- ing the first week of each month. Buy locally and support your local Senior Center. For after hours drop-offs please con- tact Pauline 503-429-5810. Week Day Lunches: The Vernonia Senior Center offers nutritious and tasty lunches each weekday for only $4. These are available to the public, not just Senior Citizens. (Mealtime is noon; late arrivals may not be served.) You can reserve your lunch by calling by 11:15 AM, or further in advance if possible, to assist the cooks as they prepare the day’s meals. Maple Bars available locally! Con- nie King, the cook at the Senior Cen- ter, is making maple bars each day. The maple bars are available to the public, too, and only cost $1 each. Availability is subject to quantity on hand. You can assure yourself of a good supply by pre-ordering them di- rectly from Connie by calling the Se- nior Center (503-429-3912) any week day, from 7:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one day lead time for larger or- ders. The Center’s front door opens Special Days: On the last Wednes- day of the month Wauna Credit Union will be serving ice cream. On the last Friday of the month we will serve birthday cake and ice cream to cel- ebrate that month’s birthdays. Membership Dues: Another way to support Vernonia’s Senior Center is to pay the $15 annual membership dues. Checks may be mailed or dropped off at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and older may join.
