in case you missed it 2 nd Annual Vernonia Sportsman’s Banquet The Vernonia Christian Church (VCC) hosted the 2 nd Annual Vernonia Sportsman’s Banquet on April 23 rd . Larry D. Jones was the guest speaker and the event included a BBQ dinner. “First of all, the VCC Sportsman Banquet staff would like to thank all of you in our community who supported the event and attended,” said VCC Pastor, Sam Hough, who helped organize the evening. “We are humbled by the support and the opportunity to bring an event like this to our community. This being the second year, we have added some things, improved some things, and learned some lessons about how to improve for the future. This year we had a great turnout and even added to our mount wall to support more entries into the mount contest.” Hough went went on to talk about some of those lessons learned. “One thing we learned was we tried to do too much,” Hough explained. “We brought in Larry D. Jones, a world known and respected celebrity in the hunting world who is seen as an authority in elk hunting and black tail hunting. We figured since we had a man like him here we should try to capitalize and ask Easter Egg Hunt! Vernonia kids enjoyed a beautiful spring morning as they hunted for Easter eggs at Hawkins Park. The annual event is sponsored by the Vernonia PTA. Rebuilding Vernonia, Part II continued from page 18 Assessment may be in the form of a Phase I Environmental review, and could expand to a Phase II review if determined necessary. Land that is contaminated by petroleum, petroleum products, and related wastes must meet additional requirements to be eligible for cleanup. After a site is assessed, each site may be eligible to apply for EPA brownfields funding to carry out clean-up activities. An eligible entity may apply for up to $200,000 per site. EPA funding is available through Clean-Up Grants, Revolving Loan Fund Grants, and other programs. “If significant contamination is found, the city and the landowner can work in partnership to pursue a clean- up grant, in addition to the assessment grant,” says Haack. According to Haack, there are a number of ways to fund clean- ups— sometimes grants are available, sometimes property owners may have to use a below market value loan. Haack also says that it is generally a requirement that the land owner and City would have to negotiate some type of relationship that includes the city having some stake in ownership of the land. “There is an expectation that, for there to be public investment in a private owner’s land, there is an exchange of value back to the public sector for helping the property owner cure a problem that they either created themselves or unknowingly acquired when they purchased the land,” says Haack. There are many benefits to a community participating in a Brownfields Assessment Program. Assessments are completed by a contractor hired by the community at no cost to the property owner. The information generated can be used to satisfy regulatory agency requirements or purchaser concerns. Revitalized land can be reused in ways that offer the greatest local benefit. Community-wide benefits of brownfields reuse may include: Eliminating health and safety hazards; Eliminating eyesores; Reinvigorating communities and jump- starting local economies; Increasing property values; Bringing new investment into the community. With the application for a Brownfields Assessment Grant, the City of Vernonia has taken the first step towards seeking assistance for a difficult and lingering problem for many local property owners. The benefits could be many and may be long-reaching. Larry travels the country doing events and seminars like ours. We asked Larry to share his seminars with us and to wrap it up with a message about his personal faith. We realized as the night went on that we tried to do to much at once. Because of that we had a mixed crowd. Those die hard hunters who knew of Larry loved the opportunity to soak in his time, and those not so familiar with him felt like it went on to long. I think it’s important that we acknowledge that.” Hough still felt the evening was a success. “We are thankful for Larry coming to be a part of our banquet and we are thankful for all those who came out to be a part as well,” he said. “Next year we will try to be more on target and focused with our speaker’s time. I think that’s the greatest lesson we learned this year. Thank you again to all of our april26 2011 19 friends in and around our community who participated.” Door Prize Winners 1.
