community “Vernalla” Schools Complete Band Tour continued from page 10 was cancelled because the school was closed due to one and a half feet of snow! The group spent the night in the gym where they played basketball, and threw themselves an impromptu dance. Day six included a bus ride-- with chains-- out of the town of Dunsmuir and a long ride home. The kids were sad to say goodbye to new friends from Molalla. “That’s what we really want the kids to understand-- it’s about making good music and forming connections,” says Izzett. The bands will be together again in Molalla on April 25 th for another joint concert. Vernonia Band Director Rob izzett was named “Karaoke King.” The band wishes to thank the Vernonia Community PTA, Vernonia Boosters and Vernonia Band Boosters for their sponsorship. The band also wishes to thank Mr. Izzett and Mrs. McCroskey for all of the work they did to take them on the “Best Band Tour Ever!” Columbia County to Host Emergency Shelter Class Columbia County Emergency Management wants to make sure local citizens are properly sheltered when major disasters strike, and those interested in helping can be properly trained at an upcoming class. A shelter operations course will be held Saturday, April 30th from 9 AM-4 PM at the Columbia County Sheriff Office, 901 Port Avenue in St. Helens. The course will be instructed by representatives from the American Red Cross office in Portland and will focus on how to work in a certified shelter during emergencies. “We have been focusing time and energy on making sure our relationship with the Red Cross on opening and running shelters is top-notch,” says Derek White, director of emergency management for Columbia County. “The Red Cross is mandated by Congress to assist with shelters and we want to do what we can to assist them with that process.” Those interested in taking the class must pre- register with Columbia County Emergency Management. Her teacher says she works hard at being helpful and polite and does her best at following the 4 be’s. If anyone needs a helping hand Brianna is someone that can be called on. Brianna says she likes recess and lunch time at school and her favorite activity is Wallball. Outside of school Brianna plays softball and is in Girl Scouts. She has two dogs, Gunner and Luna, and a Guinea Pig named Julia. When she grows up, Brianna wants to be a Doctor, Veterinarian, a first grade Teacher or a Librarian. Emilee Easlon , Grade 8 “Emilee is the type of student that you wish that you would have in all of your classes,” say her teachers. She is responsible and takes initiative and is always ready and willing to help. She has a great sense of humor, always has a smile on her face and is a great role model to the rest of the student body. Emilee plays the flute in the band, is on the Track and Field Team and is part of Student Leadership. Emilee says her favorite subject in school is Language Arts. Emilee says she enjoys hanging out with friends and family and reading. She has two cats, Chester and Juno. Jacob Alf , Grade 12 Jacob is an excellent student athlete. A member of the National Honor Society, Jacob was an All League Football player as a Junior and won a wrestling District Title as a Senior. He loves to play golf and is a key member of the VHS Golf Team this Spring. He is part of the Leadership Class and tries to help around school and around the community.
