Logging Show Planning
Organizers have begun to
meet and plan for the 2011 Vernonia
Logging Show and they are looking
for some help.
The Logging Show, held
during the first weekend in August
as part of the Vernonia Jamboree,
was cancelled last year. “Jamboree
just isn’t Jamboree without the Log-
ging Show,” says Kelly Baska, who
is helping organize the event this
year. “It’s a go for this year, though.
It definitely will happen.”
Baska has begun meeting
with a committee to begin planning.
The group is meeting on the second
Wednesday of each month at 7:00
PM at the Vernonia City Hall, and
anyone interested in helping make
the Logging Show happen is invit-
ed to attend. The next meeting is
scheduled for April 13 th .
“We’re definitely making
headway, but you can never have
too many people to help with set up,
and other things,” says Baska.
Baska says donation re-
quest letters would be sent out
shortly and that he was hoping any-
one who has been involved in past
Logging Shows, as well as any oth-
er interested people, will turn out
for the next meeting to help give
input.
“We’re hoping to make this
year’s show really good,” says Bas-
ka.

Battle of the ABC’s to Raise Money for
Columbia Pacific Food Bank
Columbia Pacific Food Bank is planning an
interesting and fun event to raise funds to help fight
hunger in Columbia County.
On May 21 st Columbia Pacific Food Bank will
present “Battle of the ABC’s” at the National Guard
Armory.
Highlights of the evening include “battles”
between local bands (the B in ABC) and a local chef
competition (the C). Members of the US Army will
also be on hand to do demonstrations (the A).
The Food Bank is looking for Cooks and
Caterers to compete and be named Columbia County’s
Most Outstanding Chef. Chefs will battle on stage,
preparing a dish from a secret ingredients basket;
judges will chose a winner. Chefs are also encouraged
to bring their Signature Dish for guests to taste; guests
will vote for their favorite dish and the chef receiving
to most votes will win $1,000.
Applications for the Chef Competition must be
received by March 31, 2011. There is a $100 entry fee.

Fabulous breakfasts are available
to the public on Fridays for a cost
of only $3.50. The event happens
at the Senior Center (446 Bridge
Street) from 7:30 to 9:00 AM each
Friday. Meal price includes a bev-
erage, too. Enter through the side,
parking lot door. What a deal!
Week Day Lunches: The Verno-
nia Senior Center offers nutritious
and tasty lunches each weekday
for only $4. These are available to
the public, not just Senior Citizens.
(Mealtime is noon; late arrivals may
not be served.) You can reserve
your lunch by calling by 11:15 AM,
or further in advance if possible, to
assist the cooks as they prepare the
day’s meals.
Maple Bars available locally!
Connie King, the cook at the Senior
Center, is making maple bars each
day. The maple bars are available
to the public, too, and only cost
$1 each. Availability is subject to
quantity on hand. You can assure
yourself of a good supply by pre-
ordering them directly from Connie
by calling the Senior Center (503-
429-3912) any week day, from 7:00
AM-3:00 PM. Please allow one day
lead time for larger orders. The Cen-
ter’s front door opens at 9:00, but
the side parking lot door opens at
7:00. Ah, sweet treats!

Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be
found in Vernonia’s Senior Center in
their Thrift Store. The retail store is
open Monday through Friday, from
9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift
Store provides funds for the Senior
Center’s facility and its many activi-
ties. Donations can also be dropped
Membership Dues: Another way
to support Vernonia’s Senior Center
is to pay the $15 annual member-
ship dues. Checks may be mailed
or dropped off at the Senior Center.
Anyone 50 and older may join.
Special Days: On the last Wednes-
day of the month Wauna Credit
Union will be serving ice cream. On
the last Friday of the month we will
serve birthday cake and ice cream
to celebrate that month’s birthdays.

Vernonia First Friday
Call out to Artists, Crafters, Musicians
or anyone who is interested in participating
in the Vernonia First Friday Events. First
Friday is an extension of Hands on Art that
brings the community together to celebrate
its local talent, have fun and maybe learn something new.
The 2011 Season begins the first Friday in May and ends
in October.
We are looking for people who are interested in
helping to organize the event as well as craft vendors, art-
ists, musicians or other talent.

Raising Funds for
Trip to Australia
Alexander Miller, a football player from
Jewell High School is hoping to travel to Australia
this summer to compete in the Down Under Sports
Tournament. Miller will represent the state of Oregon
in the competition. Miller is currently seeking
sponsors to help him with his goal of attending this
once in a lifetime opportunity.
The Down Under Sports Tournament is
Organized by International Sports Specialists, Inc.
(ISSI) which provides a forum for athletes from
other countries to compete head to head in the sport
they love. The Down Under Sports Tournaments
have included competition in football, cheerleading,
basketball, volleyball, golf, cross-country, track and
field, free style wrestling, and swimming. ISSI’s
goal is to continue to provide athletes who excel in
their sport the opportunity to experience the culture,
beauty and grandeur of the land Down Under
all within the framework of spirited and intense
competition in many different sports.

Missionary?
“What is a Missionary?” Is this the prize
winning answer on “Jeopardy” or the theme of
Vernonia’s Missions Conference April 8-10, 2011?
Both are good-to-go.
Everyone is invited to meet “foreign”
missionaries Orin and Rosa Kidd, Ben and Jennifer
Bogel and “home” missionary Ellen Cook speaking
at the Nehalem Valley Bible Church. You will
soon share their amazing delights and disturbances
of daily duties in Indonesian areas and also serving
in the Pacific Northwest.
Orin Kidd kicks-off the weekend events
Friday 7pm, followed by the popular and delicious
Saturday 8:00 AM Men’s Breakfast, featuring
an inspirational message from Ben Bogel. The
warmth of Rosa, Jennifer and Ellen highlight the 12
noon Ladies Tea. The 7:00 PM Saturday meeting
spotlights both Ben and Jennifer who are currently on
furlough in Astoria. Sunday, April 10th, 10:00 AM,
Ellen speaks to all Sunday School classes and Orin
during the 11:00 AM Worship Service. A Potluck
Lunch follows and all return for more fellowship at
6:30 PM with the full panel of missionary speakers
sharing one last time.
Reservations are needed for meals but all
events are without charge, so please call Pastor
Gary Taylor at 429- 5378 to reserve a spot at our
banqueting tables. We hope to find you there for a
wonderful weekend of fellowship.
