Howard, 70, a former resident of Portland, Oregon, late of the Beaverton community, died Sunday afternoon, February 6, 2011 at the Porthaven Care Center in Portland, Oregon. No Service will be held per his wishes. Private Interment will be held at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080 Bridge Street in Vernonia, Oregon. JACK SHERRIN HOWARD was born March 24, 1940 in Santa Maria, California, the 4 th child of Joel Howard and Stella M. (Wayne) Howard. In 1940 they moved to St. Helens, Oregon, and after a few years to Vernonia where Jack attended Vernonia schools, having been a graduate of the Vernonia High School Class of 1958. Upon his graduation he joined the United States Army on December 3, 1958. Jack served for two years, until receiving his discharge on July 29, 1960 at the rank of Private First Class. Following his discharge, he married Katherine Abbott in 1963. They lived in Portland while Jack worked for Oregon Casket Company. They had two children, Kristen Howard Janosik and William Brian Howard. They later divorced and Jack was to marry twice more with both marriages ending in divorce. He later took up welding and stayed with that profession until he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Stella Howard; his sister, Joyce Christensen and his brother, William “Bill” Howard. Survivors include his children Kristen Howard Janosik of Pennsylvania and William Brian Howard of Portland, Oregon; his five grandchildren; his three sisters, Barbara Glaske, of Beaverton, Oregon; Nancy Howard, of San Diego, California; and Susan Miller, of Portland, Oregon; and his brother and sister-in- law, Scott and Delsey Howard, of Tigard, Oregon. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 8725 NE Sandy Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97201, in his memory.
