According to Tompkins, the Wauna Mill employs approximately 950 employees with an annual payroll of over $94 million. Wauna employees have an average of seventeen years of service and earn an average wage of $20.97/hour. Located in Clatsop County, the Wauna Mill has been in operation since 1965 and produces nationally-branded consumer products like Quilted Northern and Angel Soft bath tissue, Brawny and Sparkle towels, Vanity Fair and Dixie napkins and other commercial brands. The luncheon also included an explanation and discussion about the operation of the biomass Fluidized Bed Boiler that the Wauna Mill operates, using 70,000 dry tons of production waste to generate heat and energy for the plant and surrounding utilities. This was significant, because the Vernonia School Project is expected to install a biomass boiler to provide heat for the building. The Wauna boiler was manufactured in 1995 and put into operation in 1997. Its use saves 1.2 billion BTU’s of natural gas energy, annually. The explanation of the Wauna biomass boiler operation concluded with a tour of the plant control room, and the boiler and generator plant.
