8 area news november9 2010 Banks Library News Join us at the Tanasbourne branch of Barnes and Noble on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20 for a book fair to benefit the Banks library. What a great way to get a head start on holiday shopping. A proceed of sales from patrons who mention the library will be donated to the library. On Fri- day night, we will have a special bonus craft night at Barnes and Noble from 6:00 to 9:00 PM On Saturday after- noon, members of the Banks Junior and High School bands will perform in small groups. Check them out between 1:00 and 3:00 PM on Saturday. Most people who preserve are winding up for the year, but if you are planning to do more this year or prepare for next year, make sure that you have the most up-to-date recommendations for food safety. Our library recently withdrew canning publications that were outdated, but be careful when using heirloom recipes or older publications. Current information is always available from the extension office. Recycling is back at the li- brary! We have a new drop box that ac- cepts mixed paper as well as newspaper. Please let us know if it is getting full when you put paper in. Join us for craft night Wednes- day, November 10 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the community room. En- joy some lively conversation while you work on your favorite craft. Come and meet some new friends or visit with old ones while using the library’s work space and enjoying some light snacks. You may find knitters, scrap bookers, quilters and maybe even a tatter or two. Do you have a youngster who needs something to do on Wednesday morning? Story time at the library could be the answer to what to do. Our reader, Miss Cathy, picks a few stories around a theme each week and shares these stories with the children in an entertaining, en- gaging way. Join us for Preschool Story Time on Wednesdays at 10:15 AM in the community room of the library. Story Time is designed for children aged three to six, but younger siblings are welcome. The remaining themes for November are: November 17: Fire-breathing Dragons November 24: Thanks a Lot The Friends of the Banks Pub- lic Library can always use your support. You can make a tax deductible donation, become a member, or volunteer. Money that the Friends raise helps the library purchase Cultural Passes,upgrade equip- ment and purchase books and movies. Also, we take donations of books that are in good condition. Shoestring Community Players Presents “Hat Tricks” “Hat Tricks” is an exciting compilation of five scenes and three monologues designed for performance by mature actresses. Covering a range of women’s experiences in the second half of life, these eight pieces range from the purely comedic to those that combine humor with thoughtful and sometimes poignant explorations. This is a richly varied collection featuring a single intriguing commonality: Every scene or monologue includes the presence and compelling use of a HAT! Directing this comedy is Shannon Vaerewyck, who has been involved in ShoeString Community Player since its inception and is a charter member. The cast of women features seasoned actresses of theatre; Joey Baker, Leslie Barker, Betty Fischer, Joan Heide, Kitty Heide, Sonia Lujan, and Patty Rismoen. Performances will be at the St. Helens High School Loo Wit Room, Building B. Show dates and times are for November, Thursday 18th & Friday 19th at 7:00 PM and Saturday 20th at 2;00 PM and 7:00 PM Ticket prices are Adults $8 and Seniors/Students $6. ShoeString Community Players is currently reviewing and soliciting proposals from directors for next years Summer Musical in July 2011. Proposal should include introductory letter, resume, proposal, schedule, production staff, budget, and projections. The ShoeString Community Players has been producing plays and other performances in Columbia County for 30 years. Formed from a dedicated group of “Reader’s Theater” performers, SSCP was officially founded in 1982. The first production was Brigadoon, performed at the St. Helens High School Olmscheid Auditorium. SSCP has consistently produced productions and performances since that time, tapping into the rich and “undiscovered” talent Columbia County and its surrounding areas have to offer. Free Dental Care Available The Oregon Dental Association will provide FREE dental care through a Mission of Mercy (MOM) program on Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Doors will open at 6:00 AM at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE MLK Jr Blvd., Portland, OR. Patients will be seen on first-come, first-served basis with a maximum of 1,000 patients seen each day. The day’s patient quota is typically reached by 10:00 AM, so come early! This free service is open to adults and children of all ages who are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to visit a dental office and do not have a medically-compromising condition that prohibits receiving care. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Care provided includes Terry’s Gym TRAIN LIKE A CHAMPION! cleanings, fillings, extractions and limited treatment partials offered. All work is provided for free by 1,000 dental professionals and community volunteers donating their time and skills. Photo identification, social security number or other personal identification/documentation is NOT required. Interpreters will be available to assist Spanish, Russian and Vietnamese speaking patients. Please do NOT wait for the ODA Mission of Mercy to seek care for dental pain, as this could signal a serious condition.
