6 community news november9 2010 Senior Center Activities Connie’s Fabulous Break- fasts: Fabulous breakfasts are available to the public on Fri- days for a cost of only $3.50. The event happens at the Senior Center (446 Bridge Street) from 7:30 to 9:00 AM each Friday. Meal price includes a bever- age, too. Enter through the side, parking lot door. What a deal! Week Day Lunches: The Ver- nonia Senior Center offers nu- tritious and tasty lunches each weekday for only $4. These are available to the public, not just Senior Citizens. (Mealtime is noon; late arrivals may not be served.) You can reserve your lunch by calling by 11:15 AM, or further in advance if possible, to assist the cooks as they pre- pare the day’s meals. Maple Bars available locally! Connie King, the cook at the Senior Center, is making maple bars each day. The maple bars are available to the public, too, and only cost $1 each. Avail- ability is subject to quantity on hand. You can assure yourself of a good supply by pre-ordering them directly from Connie by calling the Senior Center (503- 429-3912) any weekday, from 7:00 AM-3:00 PM. Please al- low one day lead time for larger orders. The Center’s front door opens at 9:00, but the side park- ing lot door opens at 7:00. Ah, sweet treats! Thrift Store: Bargain prices can be found in Vernonia’s Se- nior Center in their Thrift Store. The retail store is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The Thrift Store provides funds for he Senior Center’s facility and its many activities. Donations can also be dropped off during those same hours, and donated clothes need to be clean and in good condi- tion so they are “sales ready”. We are offering half off during the first week of each month. Buy locally and support your local Senior Center. On the last Friday of the month we will serve birthday cake and ice cream to celebrate that month’s birthdays. Membership Dues: Another way to support Vernonia’s Se- nior Center is to pay the $15 an- nual membership dues. Checks may be mailed or dropped off at the Senior Center. Anyone 50 and older may join. The photographs depict local loggers and logging operations from the years 1976 to 1985. Free Child Safety Seat Checkup Event Columbia County Safe Kids, in partnership with Alliance for Community Traffic Safety (ACTS Oregon) and several community partners, will be holding a child safety seat check up event on Thursday, November 11, 2010, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The free clinic will be held in Vernonia at the Vernonia Fire Station, 555 E. Bridge Street, Vernonia. The clinic provides an opportunity to have a child safety seat checked by a certified technician, who can correct misuse, help with installation and teach you how to correctly install the seat. Technicians can also check for seat recalls. There is no cost to have a technician check County Furlough Day Scheduled for Friday, November 12, 2010 Due to the County’s budget situation, the County Board of Commissioners approved the implementation of four unpaid furlough days for County employees at the beginning of the current budget year. Friday, November 12, 2010 is a scheduled furlough day for all County employees, with two New Group to Help Spur Job and Business Growth Bright spots can be hard to find in today’s economy. Fortunately, the Columbia County Economic Team is now actively working to fix that through a new local partnership for economic development. The organization officially launched on October 1 when its board- of-directors met for the first time. It was the beginning of what is likely to be a long-term initiative geared towards making Columbia County more productive and competitive for community-sustaining businesses. In turn, the organization hopes to its efforts will yield more employment opportunities, a larger tax base, better infrastructure, and more vital communities, overall. David Stocker, executive director for the Columbia County Economic Team, explained, “this organization wants to improve the economic well-being and quality-of- life for all communities in Columbia County.” He added, “We know that none of us can do it alone, which is why elected officials and many business leaders throughout the county have embraced a team approach.” In fact, each of Columbia County’s communities—from Clatskanie, to Scappoose, Vernonia, and all those in between—are represented on the organization’s board-of-directors, along with leaders from the Columbia County Board of Commissioners, the your child safety seats. Please plan to spend 30-60 minutes at the event. Additionally, through a grant funded by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Columbia County Safe Kids is also able to provide low-cost child safety seats to families in need. Families who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) should contact their worker about payment for a seat. For more information about the clinic or the Columbia County child safety seat program, please contact the Commission on Children and Families at 503-397-7211. Port of St. Helens, the public utility districts, and Portland Community College. Representatives from a dozen businesses operating in the county also sit on the board, bringing essential private-sector insight on how best to strengthen Columbia County’s business climate. Tony Hyde, Columbia County Commissioner and a member of the Columbia County Economic Team’s Board of Directors remarked, “I’m excited to see all of Columbia County working together as a team with a common goal of creating jobs and improving our local economy.” If the organization’s big picture goals are ambitious, its day-to-day work is expected to create tangible results for individual businesses and, by extension, their employees. The organization is now planning what services it will offer to businesses already located in the county--to keep them local and support their growth—while also launching a campaign to encourage new businesses to consider the advantages of operating in Columbia County. Waste Management Collects Food for the Hungry; Set food next to carts November 9-13 Waste Management is again reaching out to customers in Scappoose and Vernonia to help feed the hungry. All food collected will go to the Columbia Pacific Food Bank for distribution during the holidays. To help, WM customers in Scappoose and Vernonia may place non- perishable food next to carts on regular collection days during the week of Nov. 9-13. Waste Management drivers will pick up the donations and deliver them to the food bank. In 2009, Waste Management customers from Scappoose and Vernonia donated more than 1,700 pounds of food during the food drive.
