(503) 429-6611 Lawrence Judson Garner December 6, 1933 to July 2, 2010 Rachel Seibert graduated in June from Portland Community College with an Associate in Arts Transfer Degree with Highest Honors. She will be attending Pacific University in Forest Grove this fall to pursue a degree in medical social work, for which she has earned sev- eral scholarships. Rachel was in a severe horse riding accident in March 2008 and has made a miraculous recovery. We once again want to thank the Vernonia emergency personnel for their excellent care, and the community for their sup- port, thoughts and prayers. He was on the crew that sawed the first log the first day the mill was in operation and the final log the final day of operation. Larry’s mother, Lesta Katherine Weed Garner, was the daughter of Judson Weed and Emma Van Blaricom. Both families were among the earliest settlers of the Nehalem Val- ley. Lesta was a well-respected amateur historian whose articles for the Vernonia Eagle and Columbia County Historical Society are still in print and frequently referenced by local genealogists. Larry received his K-12 edu- cation in Vernonia schools, graduating with the class of 1952. In April 1953, he married classmate, Doris Hahmeyer. Together they had three children and later divorced. In the 1950s, he worked for Safeway. Through much of the 1960s and 1970s, he was employed by the Ver- nonia Eagle working in virtually every capacity on the newspaper staff – type- setter, copy writer, reporter, photogra- pher, and ultimately editor. After the newspaper closed, he attended Western Oregon State College and transitioned to his third career as a counselor in the Willamette Valley. His final profession was post-retirement as a part time night watchman and security guard for Pinker- ton assigned to Intel Corporation. During his Vernonia years he was involved with various community groups, serving as a volunteer fire fight- er and hunter safety instructor. In recent years he was very active in the local Hawaiian community and enjoyed many of the local activities and events in the Native American community. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eloise. He is survived by a daughter, Sue Garner (John Warsinske) of Philomath Oregon; son, Brad Garner (Nora) of Tualatin Oregon; son, Karl Garner (Susan) of Dayton Oregon; grandson, Paul Garner of Bellevue Nebraska; granddaughter, Kenna Warsinske, a student at Portland State University; granddaughter, Marza Warsinske, a student at Weber State University; great granddaughter, Elyzabeth Garner of Bellevue Nebraska; life partner, Helen Huston of Portland Oregon with whom he shared 6 stepchildren, 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great- grandchildren. Larry, his mother, and all three of his children are VHS alum. His grandfather, Judson Weed, and cousin, Ozias Cherrington, were the first school teachers in the Nehalem Valley. Judson and his eldest child, Oscar Weed, were influential in establishing Vernonia High School. Larry’s mother, Lesta, was a member of the first graduating class.
