By Maria Lemay What a journey! We have finally broken ground for the new Community Garden in Vernonia. I could bore y’all with the details, but let’s save that for a Beer Garden moment. May 9 th, 2009, a group of Verno- nia residents completed the Ford Institute Leadership Program (FILP, Cohort 3) and committed to a project called ‘Vernonia Community Garden.’ Fundraising for this project began in earnest as the group organized various yard work raffles, at- tendance at First Fridays and Open Air Markets, had a booth at Jamboree and even danced their way to the monetary goal; from an old-fashioned Line Danc- ing event to a Jazzercise extravaganza in February ‘10. Donations came in to Ver- nonia Cares for the project and finally al- most $3,000 was raised. On Thursday, July 1, the lo- cal Kiwanis group signed a lease with the City to obtain two city lots on Birch Street finally enabling the FILP gradu- ates, (Cohort 3), to take this project into its construction phase. And so, let the real fun begin; construction of the ‘gar- den’ including tool shed, compost bin, raised beds, irrigation capability and ground-level beds. An area for the new- ly graduated Master Gardener group will be allotted as well as for Vernonia Cares Food Bank. We will update the community as we go forward and thank those who have helped us along the way. For those interested, we will meet at 10:00 AM on the 17 th to work at the site. Members of the Ford Family Foundation Cohort 3 and the Master Gardeners Program prepare the site for the new Vernonia Community Garden. Mackenzie Carr Named “Miss Rodeo Oregon” continued from page 11 said Barb Carr. “She has obviously touched many people with her passion. The hardest thing for (father) Alan and I was not being able to have any contact with her during the four-day pageant. The hug, complete with tears, I got after it was all over will stay with me forever.” The Carr family will be hosting “Congratulatory Open House” for Mackenzie on Friday, July 23 rd , from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Vernonia Community Learning Center. “We thought this would be a good way to let the community have a chance to visit with her,” said Barb Carr. In other rodeo pageant news, on the evening of June 26 th 2010 Kiernan Hull from Newberg, Oregon was crowned Teen Miss Rodeo Oregon and Haley Marie Jones from St. Helens Oregon was crowned Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon for the 2011 year during the first performance of the 24 th Annual Tillamook County Rodeo. Kiernan Hull is the daughter of Christine & Daniel Hull, M.D. Rodeo is not Kiernan’s only passion, she also is involved and competes in Equestrian Vaulting, Jumping, Dressage, and Mountain Trail where she has attained three National Titles. Kiernan won the knowledge, appearance, speech, and horsemanship awards in addition to the title. Haley Marie Jones is the daughter of Keeley and Brian Jones. Haley maintains a 4.0 grade point average at Yankton Arthur Academy where she will be entering the 8 th grade this fall. Haley has many hobbies including: reading, acting, dancing and roller-skating. However she loves Haley Jones of St. Helens is the 2011 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon. She and Jett have fun going on trail rides and competing in barrel racing and the flag race. Haley took home the title and the appearance and horsemanship awards. Congratulations Ladies!
