10 community april13 2010 Robinson Challenges Wu for Friends and Alumni of Congressional Seat Vernonia Schools Plan Reunion First continued from page 8 Planning is now underway for “Vernonia’s Biggest Class Reunion” on August 15, starting at 10:00 AM. This is an open invitation to anyone who has ever attended school in Vernonia. Cur- rently the list of invitees contains names from 1939-2010. A $5.00 registration fee will be collected with proceeds go- ing toward Vernonia’s new schools This event has joined with the traditional “Old Grads Picnic” which in the past has been scheduled for the Sunday after Jamboree. This event will replace the Old Grads Picnic this year. Registration will be at the Green Building in the Cafeteria. All build- ings will be open for attendees to walk through, including Historic Washing- ton Grade School and the VHS Logger Dome. There will food vendors, music, prizes and much more. If you are, or know someone who is, a contact person for your class please email VernoniasReunion@ya- hoo.com or post information on Face- book - “Friends and Alumni of Vernonia Schools.” Currently there are over 400 members of the Facebook page and al- ready almost 100 have confirmed their attendance. Over thirty gardening enthusi- asts have enrolled in the OSU Extension Service Master Gardeners Program and have been meeting weekly at the Verno- nia Grange. The program is being led by Extension Agent, Chip Bubl, who works from the St. Helens office and has been working there since 1978. Lynn Ber- ry and Jack Agee are assisting Bubl as Class Coordinators. “This is a great turn out here in Vernonia,” said Bubl. “The interest was obviously here. This is a really focused community who are very engaged with each other.” The program educates Orego- nians about the art and science of grow- ing and caring for plants and facilitates the training of a highly educated corp of volunteers. These volunteers extend sus- tainable gardening information to their communities through education and outreach programs. “Class members are obligated to payback some of their instruction time by volunteering in the community,” explained Bubl. “One of the points of focus for this class will be to work with the group that is developing a Community Garden.” The class meets on Tuesdays from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If we don’t give them that chance, we will create a permanent underclass that is discrimi- nated against because they can’t get a fresh start and can’t get a job because of what happened to their credit rating.” When asked what would suc- cess look like after two years if he were elected, Robinson responded, “First of all, I will not be that Congressman you see only once every two years who comes back to get re-elected. And I think we all know who I’m talking about. I will have a continuous engage- ment here in the home district. I will be here on weekends and when Congress is not in session. I will be going out into the communities and meeting with people, to sit down and talk with people and find out what their concerns are. I’m going to be back here-- I’m not go- ing to be that absent legislator.” “ T h e people will have to determine whether I have been successful.” “Will I have been able to put those mechanisms in place that allow job growth here in Oregon; that allow people to get a fresh start in their work- ing lives and provide for their families; that allow them to take advantage of that education that they got when they were unemployed? Those will be yard- sticks that can be used to measure suc- cess.” Four members of Scout Troop 860, plus two of their leaders, spent one of the Spring Break days perform- ing badge-related community service and good citizenship service at Verno- nia Cares Food Bank. They came on Tuesday, March 23, and helped stock shelves, assisted clients as they loaded the groceries into their cars, and cleaned up the area around the building. “These Scouts really helped us. They worked very hard and were examples of what earnest Scouts do,” said Director Sandy Welch. Scouts who participated in this community service project were Jacob Perry, Drew Cheney, Daniel Rice, and Jacob Levenseller. Troop leaders Todd Martinez and Craig Perry were also present. “We’re glad they came,” com- mented Cares President Rosie McCoy.
