4 september events 2009 First Friday in Vernonia Labor Day week-end’s First Friday will feature another PET PARTY as a fund raiser for Vernonia Cares Pet Food division. Again featuring more dogs bobbin’ for (hot) dogs, more making pet scarves and a PET PARADE. Please bring your well-socialized cats, dogs, rats, fish and hogs to the parking lot behind the Learning Center (939 Bridge Street) to get in on the fun. Remember to bring donations of pet food to get in on the action. For more info contact Carl Davis: 503-367-2378. The popular SCAPE GOAT BURNING will be featured as part of the OPEN AIR MARKET. You’ll buy your own goat for a donation to Hands-On Art. Make a secret wish, write it on your goat and burn it up. See what happens! More fun than a chain let- ter, and the donations will help underwrite more children’s art classes and local cultural programs. The ARTS and HAND-MADE GIFTS display will be in the Learning Center. The OSU MASTER GARDENERS starring CHIP BUBL will be once again available to answer home and commercial agricultural questions. What the heck is this insect in my pantry? Should I worry? Bring him a specimen to identify—he loves that! Make him happy! The new BRING A BOOK/TAKE A BOOK tables will also be out. It’s simple: Done with that novel? Bring it in and trade it out for another book. Strictly barter only. It’s all about reading! Donations welcome. The goats banner painted at last First Friday’s event will be hung in the VCLC Courtyard. If you have ideas of events you’d like to see or would like to help out, contact Erika at: epaleck@gmail.com Birkenfeld Blues Revue and Festival The Birkenfeld Blues Revue and Festival will be held on Saturday Sep- tember 5 from 1-11:00 PM. Organized in cooperation with the Cascade Blues Association, the event will feature music by headliners the Terry Robb Band, as well as Big Monti, Alan Hager, Bill Rhodes, Frank “Paris Slim” Goldwasser, and about sixteen other performers. Proceeds will benefit the Clatsop County Tim- ber Safety Council Scholarship Fund and the Columbia County Food Bank. The festival will be held four miles north of Birkenfeld on highway 202. Tickets for the festival are $25 in advance, $30 at the gate and are avail- able through www.ticketsoregon.com. Free Concert Set for Labor Day in Catskanie Come join in the fun as the Clatskanie Arts Commission (CAC) celebrates the opening of its 21st Performing Arts Season with a free concert on Monday, September 7th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, with a fundraiser BBQ starting at 1:00 PM. The concert features The North Coast Big Band with a repertoire including traditional music of the big band era. As a fundraiser, the CAC will also be offering “family-friendly” picnic items start- ing just prior to the show featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, polish dogs, corn on the cob, coleslaw, ice cream cones, pop, ice tea, water, coffee at bargain prices. Two CAC season tickets will be raffled off (a $45 value each) during the show and all funds raised will be used to enrich CAC programs. Columbia Chorale Seeks Singers Columbia Chorale of Oregon is open to interested adults and high school students Tuesday Rupp is the new director this year. New singers welcome September 10 and 17. First Time Homebuyers Class Offered in Hillsboro Open Door Counseling Center of Hillsboro will be offering a HUD certified first-time homebuyer group class, HOMEBUYING A to Z, on Saturday, September 12th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The class will be held at the Beaverton Resource Center, 12500 SW Allen Blvd., Beaverton. Any one who has not owned a home in the last three years is considered a first-time homebuyer. The $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers will be ex- plained, as well as the no down payment USDA rural housing development program, which has recently expanded it’s qualified areas. There is no cost for attendees for this program. The cost of tuition is funded by government grants, sponsor sup- port and private donations. Topics to be covered include qualifying for down payment/closing cost assistance programs under- standing credit scores, the no down payment USDA rural housing development program, financial preparation, understanding mortgages, shopping for a home, home inspections, home insurance,the closing process, foreclosure prevention, energy efficient housing and post purchase guidance. Free Flu Shots Available The Columbia County Health Nurse will be at the Vernonia Senior Center on September 11, 2009 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM to administer free flu shots to anyone over the age of 6 months. This is for the seasonal flu ONLY. Those that want to take advantage of this opportunity may call the Senior Center to sign up at 503-429- 3912. It is not on an appointment basis, but will help the nurse know the approximate number of shots needed. Vernonia Hands-on Art 5th Annual Variety Show Vernonia’s got talent!!! Vernonia Christian Church will be offering Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University classes begin- ning in September. FPU is a thirteen week biblically based class that teaches the principles of spending your money more wisely, saving money, and getting out of debt so you can live a life of financial peace. A free preview class will be offered on September 13, 2009 at 4:00 PM in the YFC building of Vernonia Christian Church. The 13 week class series will start on September 20, 2009 at 4:00 PM and will continue every Sun- day thereafter. The class is open to ALL members of the community and all will be welcomed.
