I imagined living like the characters in the show, living the cool life in Orange County, next to Hollywood, LA, Laguna Beach, Newport and everything else that seems so great about California. I hoped I would end up in warm and sunny California. But.. No, I was going to Vernonia. Vernonia? Does anybody even know where that is?, I thought. But I ended up loving this little town in the middle of nowhere. The peo- ple and the atmosphere here are just great. The fact that this is a small town is a huge plus for a foreign exchange student, I think. It’s easier to get involved in the community and meet new people. The word spreads faster, which can also be a bad thing. I arrived here in Vernonia 280 days ago. It doesn’t seem that long at all, but the time flies when you are having fun. The first thing I remember when I came here was the drive out here from Portland. I was sitting in the car looking for signs saying something about Vernonia, but didn’t see any signs for a long time. Then suddenly I saw a sign about the Vernonia-Banks trail and I thought, “Wow, finally we are almost there.” But no. We turned onto 47 and I was thinking, “Hmm, well it must be just around the corner now.” But once again I was wrong. We kept driving in between all the trees and it felt like it took hours to get from Staley’s to Vernonia. Finally we drove into Vernonia and my first impression was, “Wow, this really is small.” But I really like Vernonia, especially because of it’s size and the people here are very nice. The students here at Vernonia High School have been really nice welcom- ing me and they all made this year amazing. I remember the Super Bowl game at the Moeller’s house. That was a lot of fun and it seemed like something real American to do. The bus rides to track meets were always fun, something would always hap- pen. I really hope that more students here from Vernonia would go be a foreign ex- change student. It’s a great experience and you learn so much about yourself and oth- er people. I am a lot more confident in my decisions and myself and know that I can do pretty much whatever I set my mind to. I am truly grateful for all the help and support from all the students and staff here at Vernonia High. And thanks a lot to Sally Harrison, Kathy Denckla and Frazier Rohm and Donna and Dale Webb for letting me stay with them all. Thanks to all of you for making this year amazing! Congratulations Class of ’09!
