Second Annual Poetry Writing Contest Mrs. Hoerauf’s third grade class at Washington Grade School has been fine-tuning their writing skills by craft- ing poetry to celebrate April’s National Poetry Month. After studying some silly examples of limericks and learning the AABBA pattern, each student composed and illustrated a limerick to display. Next the students wrote descriptive poems about their favorite color while focusing on creating a clear image in the reader’s mind. The following week, the students wrote a poem about their favorite thing to “tell a story” succinctly and finished the week with a definition poem about a feeling. Here are a few examples from the Young Writer’s Club: Green Green is the color of what you call grass And what I call silk sprouts of green Like a pattern on an elegant dress Or the color of my house The famous Irish color The Scottish love it too And that’s why I like green By Lily Swimming I love swimming when I glide across the water It feels like smooth cool air I am a dolphin gliding across the waves Cool cold water going over my skin Water is not a mystery By Emma Pink Pink as in the Pink Panther Pink like a kitten’s nose Pink like an eraser on a pencil Pink like the moon at night Pink like strawberry ice cream or shakes By Seth Safe Safe is an eagle in a nest Safe is holding your legs up Safe is helpful Safe is not dangerous By Mekhi Lily was being very silly While she was riding a filly She stopped in the road And almost hit a toad She named the toad Billy By Malynna Students at Washington Grade School Participat- ed in a jump rope fund- raiser to help purchase a climbing Wall for their PE Classes. Students who raised the most money received prizes donated by the Clever Cricket Toy Store. The top three fundraisers were: Wil- liam Schuerman $270, Emma Campos $151, and Blake Clark $129. Those students earned two free games of bowl- ing and free shoe rental at Rainbow Lanes in Forest Grove in addition to the regular prizes. Over all 37 students participated in the month long event, earning a total of $1618.10. The top fundraising class was Mrs. Hoer- auf’s 3rd Grade class who get to chose their favorite PE activity for a week! Winter Finally Says Goodbye Winter Sport Awards By Brandy Fosdick The following Student Athletes were recognized at the Vernonia High School Winter Sports Desert: On Sunday, March 1st, our small town woke up to yet more snow. Some people just grumbled and went on with their day. Some of them were a bit squeamish after December, and decided to stay in. Others, mostly kids like myself, decided to get up early and take advantage of the late storm with some end of the season sledding and snowball fights. Wrestling Caleb Rice Calvin Barnes Tylor Owen Trever Gwin By about 11:00 AM, the snow was pretty much gone, leaving everyone worry-free. But, the next morning, the snowfall had picked back up. It was decided that the storm would probably blow over and school was started at its regular time. But this was regretted when the storm only got worse, causing several school buses to be anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes later than usual. It was announced that teachers were to excuse tardies for first period. If students thought getting to school wasn’t fun, they didn’t have any idea how bad their day could get. The students bundled up as best they could, just praying there would be a break in the storm in time for them to run from the mods to the school and to the shop, though not nec- essarily in that order. If there was any day our old school was missed, it was that one. I overheard one middle school student make a good point-- at least when it rains, all you get is wet. ...at least when it rains, all you get is wet. Tylor Owen, at 160 pounds, and Trever Gwin, at 189, both lost in the semi-finals but returned to win their last match to place third. Gwin, seeded fourth, lost a close match 3-2 to eventual state champ and number one seeded Travis Moore from Gold Beach, before defeating Carlos Villa from Bandon. Owen, seeded third, lost to eventual Champion Joe Drinkwater of Burns in the semi’s before defeating Travis Wood of Har- risburg to take third place. Unseeded senior co-captain Justin Caputo won his first round match at 152 pounds 13-6 before being eliminated in the second round by fourth seeded Anthony Martin from Amity. That Monday, not only did you get wet, but you were freezing, slipping on the ice, and getting pelted in the face by sleet, all at the same time! Then the wind decided to pick up just in time for everyone to drag themselves back to the cafeteria for lunch. I really felt sorry for a couple of kids I saw wearing nothing but a t-shirt. At around 12:30 PM, it got just warm enough to melt the snow and then went back to storming. So, for the rest of the day, everyone’s bodies felt split in half. The top half was in the arctic and the bottom was wading through a slush-topped lake. In other High School wrestling news, Trever Gwin took first place at 189 pounds in the Cul- tural Exchange Qualifying Tournament, earning a trip to Japan this June. Gwin defeated Jes- se Oblack from Clatskanie for the third time this season and Aaron Barichio from Tillamook, who was this year’s 4A State Champ at 215 pounds, en route to the championship. Finally, the bell rang at the end of the day and everyone sloshed home. After a long day of Oregon weather, the students almost wished another day had been taken off summer vacation rather than having to go through that. And now that winter has said its good- bye-- hopefully, anyway-- everyone is saying hurry up with our new schools before it has a chance to say hello again. The Vernonia Middle School wrestling program had a successful fourth season. Sixteen students participated throughout the year and nine made the trip to the district meet. High school head coach James Brookins praised Cory Eason and T. John Wolf as being ready to step in and help the high school team next year. Four wrestlers attended the regional meet: Bridger Steward, Ethan Johnston, Natia Potter, and Sophia Gore.
