MICHAEL LEE “MIKE” JOHNSON, age 55, a resident of the Vernonia area, died on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Providence St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 11847 Keasey Road, Vernonia, Oregon with interment at a later date. MICHAEL “MIKE” JOHNSON was born on April 6, 1953 in Long Beach, Califor- nia, the son of Lee and Frances (Thompson) Johnson. Mike’s father was a career man in the U.S. Navy, so Mike grew-up in several cit- ies across the United States. He attended High School in Grants Pass, Oregon and after high school enlisted into the U. S. Navy. He served in the US Navy from April 24, 1970 in the col- or guard until he was honorably discharged in January of 1971. Mike married Nancy J. Hill on August 2, 1982 in Vernal, Utah and they made their home in Hillsboro, Oregon where they lived until 2005 when they moved to Vernonia, Oregon. They celebrated their Twenty-sixth wedding anniversary this last August, but had been together for a total of 32 years. Mike worked as a supervisor for Verboort Sausage for several years before going to work at Carnation Co. in Hillsboro. He also worked for Trust Joist in Hillsboro as a supervisor before he was disabled and no longer able to work. Mike was survived by his wife, Nancy Johnson of Vernonia, Oregon, his three daughters Chandra Karel, of Washington, Brandi and Brian Fennell of Vernon- ia, Oregon, and Stefanie Johnson of Vernonia, Oregon. Also survived by his mother Frances Johnson of Beaverton, Oregon, his twin brother, Matt Johnson of Molalla, Oregon, his brother and sister-in-law, Mitch and DeAnn Johnson of Auburn, Washington and by one sister and brother-in-law, Melissa and Joe Glad of Salem, Oregon. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, MaCayla, Mahaila, Courtney, Caitlyn, Vanessa, Michael and three other grandchildren. He also had numerous nieces and nephews which he loved dearly. His wife’s fam- ily includes, Marjorie Hill, Mina Towery, Virginia and John Phillips, Forest and Sue Hill, and Mary Jo Hill. He had two best friends, Victor McCloud, and Gary Whitcher who were like brothers to him. Mike enjoyed cooking, fishing, reading, watching football, and spending time with his grandchildren, and family. (503) 693-7965 DARRELL DEWAYNE KENNETH SCHOONOVER, age 29 of the Ver- nonia Community, died on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at his best friends father’s home. DARRELL DEWANYE KENNETH SCHOONOVER, was born on August 13, 1979, the son of Lavern Kenneth and Margaret Rose (Denton) Schoonover at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Mountain Home, Idaho. He grew-up in Idaho Falls, Idaho and moved to Vernonia, Oregon as a teenager. He attended Vernonia High School and later obtained his G.E.D. He worked as a Licensed Caregiver for the “Good Sheppard Lutheran Home”, “Winningham Caring Hearts”, and most recently working for his Fa- ther’s Adult Foster Home, “My Safe House” for the past two years, as a Care- giver and Director of Activities. Darrell enjoyed doing ceramics and had won a national award for ama- teur ceramics. He also enjoyed fishing, reading Sci-Fi Fantasy, playing guitar, and riding motorcycles. Survivors include his father, Lavern K. Schoonover and his step-mother, Rosalind Karczewski, of Vernonia, Oregon, his brothers, Jason Todd of Twin Falls, Idaho, Frank Alan Todd of England and Ian Todd, where a bouts un- known, his sister and brother-in-law, Dawn and Shan Mitchell of Salt Lake City, Utah, step-sisters, Kimberley Urbach of Pensacola, Florida, and Krizia Irish of Alamo, California, a close friend, Tony Walz and many friends and family from Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Portland, Forest Grove, Vernonia, Oregon, as well as Alamo, San Diego and Yreka, California. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Rose (Todd) Schoon- over in 2001 and his brother, Mickey Todd in 1991. A Celebration of Darrell’s Life was to be held . on Saturday, March 28th, at Interment will be held by the family at a later time. (503) 693-7965 GLORIA CONGER ATCHLEY, age 68, a long time resident of the Vernonia community, died early Monday morning at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints at 1350 E. Knott St., Ver- nonia, Oregon. Dedication of the Grave and interment will follow at Vernonia Memorial Pioneer Cemetery. A reception and luncheon will follow the inter- ment back at the Vernonia Ward. GLORIA CONGER ATCHLEY, was born on December 29, 1940 in Tremonton, Utah, the daughter of Arthur Bule and Beth Chrestine (Wankier) Conger. She was raised and educated in Tremonton and Brigham City, Utah. After high school she attended a business college in California where she got a certificate in bookkeeping. She was united in marriage to W. Keith Atchley in Malad City, Idaho on September 15, 1972. Following their marriage they lived in Utah, Washington and Portland, Oregon before moving to Vernonia, Oregon in 1985 where they have lived since. For about nine-teen years Gloria owned and operated “Gloria’s Spar-tree Restaurant” in Vernonia and was the camp cook known as “Cookie” for the Northwest Regional Outdoor School for about ten years. Gloria enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, sewing, crocheting, visiting with her friends and can- vas painting. Survivors include her husband, W. Keith Atchley of Vernonia, Oregon, a four daughters and sons-in-law, Shauna and David Rau of Vernonia, Dawn and Bruce Williams of Vancouver, Washington, Marie Espinoza of Washougal, Washington, and Kammy Johnson of Richmond, Utah, two sons and daughters- in-law, George Espinoza of the St. John area of Portland, Oregon, and Paul and Dianna Baumgardner of Caldwell, Idaho, a brother and sister-in-law, David and Virginia Conger of Smithfield, Utah and by a sister and brother-in-law, Vickie and Larry Lloyd of Buena Vista, Colorado and by twenty-six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and by numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Phyllis’s Life was held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Brookwood Baptist Church in Hillsboro at 3440 E. Main, Hillsboro, Oregon PHYLLIS ANNETTE BRECKENRIDGE, was born on May 7th, 1924, the daughter of Howard and Myra Beatrice (Varney) House. She grew-up and grad- uated from Fresno High School. She was united in marriage to Walter Breckenridge on August 20, 1948 in Los Angeles, California. They celebrated their forty-eighth Wedding Anniver- sary just before Walter passed away in August of 1996. Following their marriage they made their home in Los Angeles for two years before moving to Fresno, California where they raised their family and lived there until 1994. At that time they moved to Oregon, settling in the Hillsboro community. In August of 1995, they moved to Vernonia where she has resided since. Phyllis was a homemaker and a former member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Fresno and also attended People’s Church in Fresno. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother-in- law; Aaron Breckenridge, and by her son-in-law; Elmer Vanderhoof in 2007. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Vanderhoof of Hillsboro, Oregon, a son and daughter-in-law; Walter A. Daleene Breckenridge of Fresno, California and a son, Robert L. Breckenridge of Vernonia, Oregon, a step-brother, How- ard House of Gardengrove, California, a sister Lorraine Hamblen of Calimesa, California and by two step-sisters, Jean Williams of Portland, Oregon and Betty Baker of Fullerton, California. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Christina Vanderhoof of Beaverton, Oregon; Steven and his wife, Jennifer Vanderhoof of Hillsboro, Oregon; Karen and her husband David Kelly of Clearfield, Utah, Sharon and her husband Tommy Rogers and Keith Breckenridge all of Fresno, California; a great grand-daughter, Natalie Vanderhoof.
