04 vernonia’s voice what’s happening december 2008 All Invited to Christmas Dinner For the third year, Bill James & family will be holding their Annual Christmas Dinner. Vernonia Senior Center is hosting the event for 2008. The dinner will be held on Dec 25th 2008 from 1:00 PM-4:00PM. They will be serving turkey and ham with all the trimmings, as well as dessert and beverage. In the spirit of Christmas they hope that those in need as well as anyone wishing to share a Christmas meal with others will attend. There is no charge and gratuities are discouraged. Christmas in the Country Bazaar It’s time once again for the “Christmas in the Country” Booster Bazaar. This will be the 30th year!! It will be held on Saturday December 6th from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and Sunday December 7th from 12:00 – 5:00 PM. It will once again be held in the Vernonia Middle School cafeteria. There will be many new vendors, as well as old favorites, food in the caf- eteria, and pictures with Santa. If you have any questions call 503-429-1052. Cub Scouts Annual Scouting for Food Cub Scout Pack 201 will once again be scouting for food. They will be out and about on December 6, putting a bag on your front porch for non-perishable items. There is a great need in our community and anything that you can give will be appreciated. The following is a list of some of the items that can be donated: Canned: meats, fruits, vegetables, milk, soups and broths. Dry: noodles, rice, mac & cheese, flour, sugar and other such items. Hygiene Items: toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo & conditioner, toilet paper, paper towels, feminine products. Baby items: baby food, formula, diapers and wipes. The scouts will be back on December 13 to pick up the bags and take all items to Ver- nonia Cares. If you have questions or donations you can call Lisa Brewer at 503-429-4250, or 503-475-1803. Events Calendar Vernonia Town Hall Meeting and Spaghetti Feed - December 3, 5PM-7:15PM Come hear about flood recovery in Vernonia, and enjoy dinner with your neighbors-at the Vernonia Middle School. Afterwards celebrate the reopening of the VHS Gymnasium as the boys basketball team starts the season. Free tickets to the game for those who attend the Town Hall. Grey Dawn Gallery Winter Show - December 5-6 Please join Grey Dawn for the opening of their new Winter exhibit. Dis- playing work from Christopher Burkett, Cavin Richie, Jacques & Mary Regat, Jeff Patterson, J.E. Tosoni, Ian Christopher and Dave Johnson. Show opens with the annual Christmas party on Friday, December 5th, 6–9PM and continues with refreshments on Saturday, December 6th, 10AM–5PM The Lighted Christmas Parade - December 6, 6PM Starts from Washington St. onto Bridge and ending at City Hall where Santa will help light our tree and will then be available to hand out candy canes and meet with children. Girl Scout Fundraiser Washington Grade School Holiday Program - December 17 At the WGS Gym Local Vernonia Girl Scouts will be selling potted tulips and hyacinths in the month of Decem- ber as a fundraiser for our annual winter camp retreat to Camp Mountaindale. These potted tulips not only benefit our local girls but a regional grower as well, VanderZanden Farms, LLC. People may know them from their farm stand where you can buy fresh cut flowers through the spring season. Our Girl Scouts will be selling these decoratively wrapped, high quality pots for a very reasonable price of $6.00 each. The delivery date will be near or on Valentines day, 2009. You will be able to place your orders at the upcoming bazaar and through any local Girl Scout. Questions? Call Susan Ely at (503)429-5709 Mist Grade School Holiday Program, Friday December 19 At the MGS Gym Home School Cooperative Meets Vernonia has a local home school cooperative that wants to invite new families to join in the fun. This co-op meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at the Vernonia Christian Church from 1 to 3 PM. This is a safe and fun environment for parents and kids to make connections with peers and experience such fun programs such as art literacy, hands- on science and large group play not to mention crafts and creative writing exercises. Parents are strongly encouraged to join in and volunteer. The biggest focus of this cooperative is fun and enrichment for the kids! Vernonia Christian Church Food Collection Vernonia Christian Church home group will be going door to door to collect non-perishable food, paper products and dog and cat food for Vernonia. We will be doing this in the month of December and January. If you would like make sure we come to your home to deliver items to Vernonia Cares for you please give us a call.
